Most Powerful Six: Give Recognition and PraiseApril 19, 2010
Greetings!

Great job! This past week, after submitting a project I had spent a lot of time on, I received an email back from the recipient which said, "thank you SO much for all your work on this; I never could have done it without you." Now, I know she could have done it without me just fine, but I admit, I loved her words!!

When was the last time someone recognized you for an accomplishment, a job well done? Maybe today, maybe yesterday....or maybe it's been so long you can't remember!

In the workplace, there's an ongoing debate about "to recognize or not to recognize," and I admit, it's complicated. But I'm an avid believer that the benefits of intentional recognition far outweigh the challenges.

Today we look at Tip #4 in the series of the Most Powerful Six -- the six most important questions you can ask your staff to rate on a scale of 1-5, according to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. When these 6 questions are answered with a "5" rating, you have an incredibly effective staff person, team, department, and ultimately, entire organization.

Let's take a look!

Unleash the leader within!

Most Powerful Six: Giving Recognition and Praise

employee praiseEvery staff person has a need for praise and recognition, and the more often they get it, the better. Managers and supervisors are in the best position to give recognition, but few do it often enough, or creatively enough.

The third question in the Most Powerful Six questions is:
  • In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for good work?
Certainly there are many kinds of formal, agency award programs. But there are many kinds of recognition to choose from besides these. One of the most effective is simple praise. It is very difficult to provide too much positive feedback to deserving employees.

When exploring this question, consider the following:
  • What forms of recognition do we already utilize?
  • What seems to be effective, and not effective?
  • What kinds of non-cash awards could we provide?
  • Should we utilize anything that is competitive? Or cooperative?
  • Can we build an in-house recognition program?
  • Should recognition be tied to goal achievement?
There are many facets to utilizing recognition and praise, both formal and informal. There is not a generic 'right and wrong' way - but it needs to fit your culture and environment.

Great job!As with the other questions in this series, ask your staff to rate, on a scale of 1-5, the answer to today's question. If the answer is less than 5, ask the person, 'what is one thing we could do to raise that score one number higher?' What things could we do to improve the amount of recognition and praise that staff receive in our workplace? And then see what you could begin to implement. You might be amazed at the results!

And watch for the other 2 questions in this series.....and plan to incorporate all of them in your day-to-day leadership!
