Most Powerful Six: Allow them to do what they do best April 12, 2010
Greetings!

SpringSpring is definitely here in the Midwest! I've been spring cleaning and I'm SO ready to plant flowers! I love the beauty of flower beds, but one of the things I'm just not good at is deciding which flowers to plant where - I've finally learned to depend on the advice of someone who has an "eye" for that kind of thing!

Have you ever been asked to do a job that you were just "okay" at, but didn't really have the skills for and didn't really like it? And perhaps you knew you could excel in a different area if you only had the opportunity to use different skills? I'm sure you probably have experienced this; it happens every day in the workplace.

Today we look at Tip #3 in the series of the Most Powerful Six -- the six most important questions you can ask your staff to rate on a scale of 1-5, according to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. When these 6 questions are answered with a "5" rating, you have an incredibly effective staff person, team, department, and ultimately, entire organization.

Let's take a look!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #158
Most Powerful Six: Allow them to do what they do best

Talent is one of the hottest topics in the workplace; how to discover it, how to develop it, how to keep it. But maybe more important than any of those, is how to align it. We can have some of the best talent possible, but if it's not properly aligned with the job assignment, the effectiveness of that talent is lost.

Happy employeeThe third question in the Most Powerful Six questions is:
  • At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
Too often, staff feel they do not perform at their best, because what they are "best" at is not needed in the job assignment they are given. Jim Collins, in his book Good to Great, says it's imperative that we have "the right people in the right seat on the right bus." In essence, that we align the greatest skills and passions of the staff person with the job assignments they are given.

When exploring this question, consider the following:
  • What does the staff person consider to be their greatest skills?
  • How do you make decisions about aligning job assignments with skill sets?
  • What kind of ongoing evaluation process do you use to determine effective alignment?
Ask your staff to rate, on a scale of 1-5, the answer to that question. If the answer is less than 5, ask the person, 'what is one thing we could do to raise that score one number higher?' What skills does the staff person think is not being utilized to its fullest? Take one step to strengthen the alignment, and to allow your staff person do "do what they do best." You might be amazed at the results.

First, Break all the rulesAnd watch for the other 3 questions coming soon.....and plan to incorporate all of them in your day-to-day leadership!
