Most Powerful Six: Do You Have the Right Tools? February 22, 2010
Greetings!

Have you ever heard tried to hammer a nail with a screwdriver? Or sew on a button with a quilting needle? In both cases, you may get the job done, but it won't be easy, and the end result may not be the quality you want.

Do you ever experience anything similar in your workplace - not having the right tools and equipment to do your job effectively? If you're in a leadership role, do you provide what's needed to your staff?

First, Break all the rulesToday we look at Tip #2 in the series of the Most Powerful Six -- the six most important questions you can ask your staff to rate on a scale of 1-5, according to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. When these 6 questions are answered with a "5" rating, you have an incredibly effective staff person, team, department, and ultimately, entire organization.

Let's take a look!

Unleash the leader within!

 MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #157
Most Powerful Six: Do You Have the Right Tools?

business toolsProviding the right tools and equipment is an important aspect of staff effectiveness that is often neglected, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's funding, sometimes it's lack of awareness of what's needed. If I asked your staff if they had all the right tools and equipment they need to do their job well, what would they tell me?

When exploring this question, consider the following:
  • The work environment is considered a 'tool' - is there privacy if privacy is needed? Comfortable temperature control? Adequate lighting?
  • Out-of-date technology is a common problem in the workplace - this includes hardware and software, and the most commonly overlooked 'tool' is technology training. Do you have effective technology with staff skills that match the task?
  • Day-to-day needs that can create frustration are sometimes an issue; paper clips, notepads, pens, etc., that are either not provided or are under lock and key and not accessible. Or copy machines that are not available for staff use but there is a long wait for the assigned staff person to make copies.
The list of tools and equipment that could be ineffective is endless - and unique to your workplace. What is missing for you and your staff?

Ask your staff to rate, on a scale of 1-5, the answer to that question. If the answer is less than 5, ask the person, 'what is one thing we could do to raise that score one number higher?' And then listen; what is he/she saying? Where is the confusion? What is causing it? Take one step to make the right tools and equipment more available. You'll be amazed at the difference just one thing will make!

And watch for the other 4 questions coming soon....and plan to incorporate all of them in your day-to-day leadership!
