Greetings!
Have you ever heard of the Most Powerful Six? It's the six most important questions you can ask your staff to rate on a scale of 1-5, according to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. When these 6 questions are answered with a "5" rating, you have an incredibly effective staff person, team, department, and ultimately, entire organization.
Over the next several weeks, we're going to take a look at all 6. I've used these personally over the years in a variety of settings, both in supervision of staff, in teaching roles, and organizational enhancement. It's a powerful tool; one that can serve you well if used effectively.
Today we look at Question number one. Use these to help yourself, and your team, to rise to your greatest potential!
Unleash the leader within!

MONDAY MORNING LEADERSHIP TIP #156 Most Powerful Six: Do You Know What's Expected? |
|
If I came to your organization and asked any one of your staff, "do you know exactly what's expected of you in your position," would he/she give me a definite 'yes'?
I'm often surprised by the answer to that. Many times there is a lot of ambivalence and confusion, and staff work to fulfill what they think are the expectations, only to find they missed the mark.
One simple thing to consider - ask your employee to describe his or her job, and then take a look at the written job description. How closely do they match? If not so good, which one is off?
Ask your staff person to rate, on a scale of 1-5, the answer to that question. If the answer is less than 5, ask the person, "what is one thing we could do to raise that score one number higher?"
And then listen; what is he/she saying? Where is the confusion? What is causing it? Take one step to make the expectations more clear and consistent. You'll be amazed at the difference just one thing will make!
And watch for the other 5 questions coming soon....and plan to incorporate all of them in your day-to-day leadership!
