Greetings!
 Have you ever heard it said that "the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know?" Well, I find that to be SO true. And the more I recognize the truth in that statement about myself, the more teachable I become.
An effective leader has to be teachable. When we think we have "arrived" as a leader, we can be sure our leadership has moved to an ineffective level. I am continually intentional about being exposed to new concepts, new teachers, and new strategies for improvement.
One of the most requested teaching tools that I use is the Personality Patch. During the past few weeks, several of you have purchased the "Through the Eyes" booklets that describe the four very different personalities, and have asked me to repeat the segment on "Knowing Your Own Leadership Style."
So check out the segment below and see if you can determine your personality and your own leadership style - knowing who you are is critical to being an effective leader!

Know Your Own Leadership Style |
|
 Each of us approach leadership differently, depending on what our personality is and what our experiences have been. Until we learn to do otherwise, we may naturally lead others the way we want to be led, which may not meet their needs at all. So know your own leadership style. See if you can find yourself below:
PLAYFUL YELLOW: The "people person," a big talker, loves excitement and fun, creative, doesn't like schedules and planners, is often late, can turn a boring task into great fun.
PROPER BLUE: Functions best in a structured environment, great planner, very organized, wants to know what's coming, need time to prepare, perfectionistic, quiet.
POWERFUL RED: Always busy, thrives on achievement and production, fast-paced, multi-tasker, long to do lists, loves to lead, somewhat bossy, little insensitive to others' feelings.
PEACEFUL GREEN: Laid back, cool/calm/collected, doesn't get in a hurry, quiet, soft-spoken, likeable, has few enemies, dislikes conflict, tends to procrastinate.
Which one are you? You're most likely a combination of two of these primarily, with the other two making up a lesser part of who you are. So think about it; if you're predominately a YELLOW/RED, and you are supervising staff who are a BLUE/GREEN, what assumptions or mistakes might you make? You are outgoing, fast-paced, people and production oriented; you will overcommit, struggle to follow through and have difficulty being on time. They are quiet, need time to process and plan, will be timely and accurate in their projects, can stay focused, but can become discouraged if things are not turning out well.
This is just one example; there are many combinations, and this Personality Patch metaphor is helpful to provide a tangible image and definition to the various leadership styles. Can you find yourself in here, and think of one thing you might do differently to relate better to the staff you supervise?
