From the Chair
by Kim Parker
Dear EAA Colleagues,
Spring is always a time for new beginnings and so it is with the EAA. This month, the membership will be electing a new chair and adding other executive & general board members. I want to thank all of the current EAA board for their commitment of time and energy to continue to move the EAA forward. Their contributions have furthered the EAA's collaborative and financial viability for the future. In particular, as Kenny Colbert retires from his service on the EAA board, we offer our many, many thanks! As a founding EAA board member your talents were instrumental in establishing the EAA.
I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as the EAA Chair. It has brought me to closer connections with my CEO peers on the pressing challenges facing associations and strengthened my resolve on the importance of the EA's role with business and how imperative our collaborative efforts are. In just returning from Scottsdale for a speaking engagement on Collaborating to Compete with America's Blood Centers, I relayed the success of the EAA. I look forward to sharing how the EAA story was so meaningful to this group in Tucson.
Many thanks to the EAA for a wonderful year!
Kim

2012 Western States Employers Association Labor and Employment Law Conference Update
The Western States Employers Association wrapped up another successful labor and employment update conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 7 - 9, 2012. As advertised, NLRB Member Brian Hayes stopped by to visit with the group and share his experiences on the Board. Board Member Hayes led a very engaging discussion regarding the significant Board cases decided over the past year and discussed the dissenting opinions he wrote in those cases.
Due to the NLRB's recent activity, this year's conference focused on the myriad of labor issues facing both union and nonunion employers including the upcoming posting requirement, changes to the representation election procedures, the Specialty Health Care decision, and health care reform and collective bargaining agreements. As always, the insight and practical experience provided by those in attendance proved to be the most beneficial aspect of the conference.
The group is excited to announce that it has changed the name of the conference to the Employer Associations Labor and Employment Law Conference. With this new name, the group will continue to reach out beyond the Western States to bring in participants from around the country. While the conference will maintain its slant toward labor topics, next year's conference will also highlight relevant employment law topics.
As next year's conference will be held in New Orleans there will be no better time to familiarize yourself with this knowledgeable and dynamic group of practitioners. So mark your calendars now for the Employer Associations Labor and Employment Law Conference March 6 - 8, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Changes at Hawaii Employers Council (HEC)
Our congratulations to both Tim Ho and Clayton Kamida! Last fall, Clayton was named as the successor President & CEO at the Hawaii Employers Council. Clayton and Tim will be joining us in Tucson for the CEO Conference next week.
Clayton had been promoted to Executive Vice President in August, 2010. In addition to his current duties as General Counsel, he assumed management responsibilities for the HEC's Human Resources and Negotiations consulting services. He also has overseen the Council's membership development and administration functions. Prior to his promotion, he served as HEC's Corporate Secretary and General Counsel for five years. He was previously with the Torkildson Katz Fonseca Moore and Hetherington law firm where his practice specialized in discrimination, wrongful termination and employment related torts.
Tim Ho, retiring President & CEO, has reflected on his years with HEC. "I'm proud of assembling a team of professional consultants and attorneys during my tenure that believe in our mission to deliver relevant services that meet or exceed member expectations 100% of the time. The services we deliver have expanded and we've been able to grow our membership by over 50% during my service as CEO. This growth has allowed us to maintain a dues schedule that includes all services without additional fees for any specific services other than for training and special projects." Our best wishes to Tim as he enters an exciting phase of his career!
Founded in 1943, the Hawaii Employers Council is celebrating its 69th year of service to Hawaii's business community. It is a nonprofit member organization serving over 800 employers statewide.
