Join President Philip Zea on a trip to the Connecticut Historical Society and the Florence Griswold Museum to view two exhibitions, one of which features embroidery from Historic Deerfield's collection: Connecticut Needlework: Women, Art, and Family, 1740-1840, and With Needle and Brush: Schoolgirl Embroidery From the Connecticut River Valley. New! Cooking with The American Frugal Housewife

Open Hearth Paul Shoul 2Come learn about early 19th-century cookery as an open hearth cook makes dishes from "receipts" (or recipes) from The American Frugal Housewife written by Lydia Maria Child in 1829. This cookbook was one of the most widely used and reprinted cookbooks in American culinary history.  Included with general admission.

 

 

Holiday Gift Making 

November 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-28

Making ValentinesFamilies will make a holiday gift to give to someone special. With thread and a needle museum educators will help visitors embroider a small design or initials on a cloth napkin. Make a unique napkin ring to go along with the napkin, and tie it up with a ribbon. Then decorate a card, and put it a gift bag. Included with general admission.

A Thanksgiving Menu

Come learn how to prepare traditional Thanksgiving dishes using hearth cooking methods. Learn a little bit about the history of harvest celebrations and the evolution of the American Thanksgiving holiday. Class participants will learn how to stuff and roast a small turkey in a tin kitchen, make a chicken pie, mash squash and turnips, fix cornbread, and make a pumpkin pie. Participants will sit down to enjoy the meal with a cup of apple cider. LEARN MORE >>>

Tea and a Tour

Join Historic Deerfield and the Deerfield Inn for a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about tea drinking in colonial Deerfield.  Enjoy a delicious and beautiful array of freshly baked scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches, cakes, sherry, cookies and more with a cup of tea! Then join Amanda Rivera Lopez, Director of Museum Education & Interpretation at Historic Deerfield, to learn about the many ways people have enjoyed tea over time. Following the tea, visit some of Historic Deerfield's tea-related collections. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for youth (12 and under), and must be purchased in advance. New! Algonkian Life

11 a.m.-4 p.m., Hall Tavern Visitor Center

Jennifer Lee w. BasketMeet Jennifer Lee, Algonkian descendant, artist and re-enactor. Lee will be at Historic Deerfield to share material culture and customs as a historical Algonkian woman. Through basket-making demonstrations and conversation, she will help visitors understand the persistence of Native American life and culture into the present. Also enjoy open hearth cooking demonstrations, and craft a hand-made gift with the help of a museum educator. Included with general admission.  LEARN MORE >>>

The Flynt Center of Early New England Life will be open weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) December 4, 2010-April 10, 2011, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The museum will reopen for the 2011 Regular Season on Saturday, April 16. Seasonal Winter Admission (except where noted for Special Events): $7 Adults, $5 Youth (ages 6-17), under 6 and members free. Historic Deerfield's museum houses are closed to the public during the winter months (December-mid-April), although pre-arranged tours-by-appointment and group tours can still be scheduled.
