Public Policy & Advocacy Series
Election Year Activities for Nonprofits
By Deborah Steinkopf Part 6 in the Public Policy & Advocacy Series
Nonprofits don't have to sit on the sidelines during an election year. There are a number of things nonprofits can do to promote democracy as long as they operate in a nonpartisan manner, as required by federal regulations. This means that nonprofits can neither support nor oppose candidates for elected office or a particular political party--be it federal, state, or local levels.

Public Policy News
Recap of Short Session
The Oregon Legislature adjourned its first annual session on Monday, March 5 with agreements on the governor's education reform bill. By overwhelming majorities, the Senate endorsed House Bill 4164, which creates a health insurance exchange intended to help individuals and small businesses find cheaper coverage, and House Bill 4165, which reorganizes and expands oversight of the state's early childhood programs. Oregon's health exchange has been mentioned as a possible model for a federal exchange. The 2012 Legislature also revised the 2011-2013 state budget to reflect shrinking revenue projections, estimated to be $340 million.
The Oregon Business Association also sums up the session in this blog post.

Member Benefits Highlight: Background Checks
Screening of paid staff and volunteers is required for many nonprofits. As a nonprofit member of NAO you have access to discounts on a variety of products and services, including background checking and screening through Ceous Global.
Why are background checks important?
A vital part of any volunteer management or hiring process, criminal background checking and screening help to:
- Place the best possible candidate
- Enhance your organization's effectiveness through greater productivity and retention
- Supplant your organization's loss prevention efforts and provide a safer environment for employees, volunteers, and clients
What is involved in a background check?
Generally, background checks go back seven years and explore address, criminal, employment, and education history, as well as other areas such as motor vehicle and sex offenses, anti-terrorist activity, drug screening, professional licensure, and other federal criminal and civil records.
How much will my organization save?
On average NAO members save 62% on standard background screening options.
