Public Policy & Advocacy Series
Meeting with Elected Officials
By Deborah Steinkopf
Part 3 in the Public Policy & Advocacy Series
To be an effective advocate it's important to establish and maintain relationships with your elected officials. This includes local elected leaders such as your city council, state representatives, and your congressional representatives in Washington. Personal visits are very effective ways to share your concern about a particular issue and to communicate your position. Face-to-face meetings are also useful in cultivating relationships with elected officials, and establishing yourself as a credible expert in your issue area.

Public Policy News
Update on the Charitable Giving Incentive Campaign
Nonprofit organizations, including the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, are actively involved in efforts to preserve the charitable giving incentive. Many responses from policymakers and their staff have been supportive, but recent news accounts indicate some lawmakers are looking at changing itemized deductions. This indicates to us that the threat is still real.
What NAO is doing: In early November, NAO proudly joined with 4,000 nonprofits from Oregon and across America in submitting the Nonprofit Community Letter urging the Supercommittee of Congress to protect and not weaken the charitable giving incentive.
- Go to www.GiveVoice.org to see a copy of the letter that was delivered to Congress. You can also view a list of all the nonprofits from Oregon and elsewhere that signed on.
- View the letter NAO delivered last week to the Oregon Congressional delegation regarding the importance of preserving the charitable giving incentive.
What is the urgency? The Supercommittee of Congress is racing to meet its deadline of November 23 to produce a plan that reduces the federal budget deficit by at least $1.2 trillion. Spending cuts, entitlement reforms, and altering the tax code are all on the table. Each decision could directly impact the ability of nonprofit organizations to provide essential programs and services in communities. The charitable giving incentive, which benefits all 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofits, could be cut back, altered, or even eliminated unless Congress hears how vitally important charitable donations are to the work of nonprofits.

In it, Carrie and Rick emphasized the important role Oregon nonprofits play in contributing to the economic vitality of our state as employers and job creators. The data cited is from a recent report on Oregon labor trends issued by the Oregon Employment Department. It's important that business leaders, policy makers, and the general public hear about the nonprofit sector's contributions to our economy, as well as stories about our social impact!
