The Role of Nonprofits in Public Policy & Advocacy 

Part I in the Public Policy & Advocacy Series

The Nonprofit Association of Oregon supports the advocacy rights of nonprofits, and believes that they can and should participate in public policy dialogues that affect their organization, community, and constituents. In addition to engaging in legislative and electoral activities, we believe that promoting the good works of Oregon nonprofits through outreach to the media and opinion leaders is also an important advocacy function.

New Voter Registration Toolkit

The deadline to register in Oregon in order to vote in the 2012 election is April 24. Nonprofit VOTE has information and tools your nonprofit can use to engage your constituents and help them register. The Voter Registration Toolkit for Nonprofits and Social Service Agencies is available in both English and Spanish. You can download the toolkit and "Register to Vote" poster from the Nonprofit VOTE website or order a print copy. For a guide to voter registration in Oregon, visit the Secretary of State website.

September Webinar: Voter Registration for Nonprofits

Registering to vote is the first and most necessary step to becoming an active and engaged voter. "The ABCs of Nonpartisan Voter Registration" webinar will help your nonprofit plan effective, nonpartisan voter registration activities. September 29 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., EST. Learn more and register.

The American Jobs Act

The American Jobs Act, outlined by the President in his September 8 speech, includes tax cuts, new infrastructure spending, changes in the unemployment system, and mortgage financing reform. It also includes tax credits for employers--including nonprofits--that hire veterans and long-term unemployed people. Nonprofit advocates are determining which parts of the President's plan are most relevant to nonprofits and what the potential impact is to the sector. Our Annual Meeting is just around the corner. This year's gathering will be held October 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kroc Center in Salem. Members can register for this free event here.

Oregon Humanities Announces 2012 Guidelines

Oregon Humanities's Public Program Grants is seeking proposals for projects that bring together diverse groups of Oregonians and reflect collaboration between organizations within a community. OH will hold a webinar about the Public Program Grants at 11:00 a.m. on September 22. The deadline for the Letter of Interest is October 31. Learn more or register for the webinar.   

Metro Central Enhancement Grant Program

This Metro grant program supports projects that benefit Northwest and North Portland residents and neighborhoods. The pre-application deadline is October 10. More information, including guidelines and forms, is available here.

WVDO Seeks Nominations for 2012 Crystal Awards

At its biennial conference for fundraising professionals, WVDO honors individuals who have had a demonstrable impact on local nonprofit work through fundraising. The 2012 Crystal Awards will be a major highlight of their May 2012 regional conference. 2011/12 Oregon Humanities Conversation Project  

The Conversations Project brings people together to learn from an expert, share ideas, and hear differing perspectives on a given subject. Conversations are free to host, last between 60-90 minutes, and are led by humanities experts. The series are a great way for organizations to more deeply explore a given topic.
