Mark Your Calendars for Our Upcoming Annual Meeting
Members of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon are invited to the 2011 Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 6 at the Kroc Center in Salem, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The morning will feature networking time and a brief business agenda, during which we will introduce our incoming, member-elected Board of Directors. This will be followed by a dynamic keynote presentation. Cynthia Cumfer, co-author of The Oregon Nonprofit Handbook, will present a historical overview of nonprofits that will demonstrate the importance of the nonprofit sector through a series of interconnected stories of people who have worked for a nonprofit and those who have been impacted by them.
Ruth McCambridge, editor-in-chief of the Nonprofit Quarterly, will look forward in her address and share insights on trends nonprofit practitioners should be aware of. Ruth transformed the Nonprofit Quarterly into a national journal in 1999. Her background includes 35 years of experience in nonprofits, primarily in organizations that mix grassroots community work with policy change. Beginning in the late 1990s Ruth spent a decade at the Boston Foundation developing and implementing its diverse capacity building programs. She has spoken and published extensively on nonprofit management and governance and we look forward to having her join us for our second annual gathering as a state association.

Public Policy News
Word on Washington
President Obama and Congressional leaders announced an agreement July 31 to raise the debt limit through 2012 and reduce the deficit. The legislation, signed by the President on August 2, immediately cuts discretionary spending by $900 billion over 10 years, and raises the debt ceiling in two steps, each time allowing Congress to vote to disapprove the increases. There are no revenue measures in the final deal, although the special joint committee called for in the agreement could recommend tax increases, including changes to the charitable deduction.

Worry Free Advocacy
The ability to effectively advocate on behalf of issues and constituents is a characteristic of high-impact organizations. Nonprofits are on the frontline of today's most pressing issues: poverty, health care reform, and the environment, to name a few. Nonprofits can add rich perspective to these debates if they advocate, and advance their missions while doing so.
Join NAO and Alliance for Justice on September 27 for an all-day advocacy training in Portland. The workshop features four sessions:
- Lobbying Rules for Nonprofits
- How Advocacy Works Panel
- Oregon State Lobbying Disclosure Rules
- Election Year Rules for Nonprofits
The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Northwest Health Foundation. Registration is $45 for members; $50 for nonmembers.
