Daring to Lead Findings Have Implications for Oregon Nonprofit Leaders

by Dahnesh Medora, Senior Consultant

Over 350 Oregon executive directors participated in a nationwide study of nonprofit executive leadership conducted by CompassPoint and the Meyer Foundation (based in Washington, D.C.). The third such study done over the past ten years, Daring to Lead surveyed a total of 3,000 executive directors across the country in hopes of learning more about the experience of being in this challenging role.

Worry Free Advocacy

The ability to effectively advocate on behalf of issues and constituents is a characteristic of high impact organizations. Nonprofits are on the frontline of today's most pressing issues: poverty, healthcare reform, and the environment, to name a few. Nonprofits can add rich perspective to these debates if they advocate.

Join NAO and Alliance for Justice on September 27 for an all-day advocacy training in Portland. The workshop features four sessions:

  • Lobbying Rules for Nonprofits
  • How Advocacy Works Panel
  • Oregon State Lobbying Disclosure Rules
  • Election Year Rules for Nonprofits

The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Northwest Health Foundation. Registration is $45 for members/$50 for nonmembers. Register today!

Wrap-up of 2011 Legislative Session

With a house evenly split between the two parties, revenue shortfalls to grapple with, and only six months to consider hundreds of bills, the 2011 Oregon legislative session ended June 30 with some victories for different subsectors of nonprofits--including emergency services, energy, education, and environmental groups--although concerns remain regarding cuts to some basic services.

None of the nonprofit oriented bills monitored by NAO's Public Policy Committee passed, including Senate Bill 40, which would have authorized the Attorney General to disqualify certain charitable organizations from receiving contributions that are deductible for Oregon's tax purposes if the organization has failed to expend at least 30% of total annual functional expenses on program services. See NAO's Policy Brief on SB40 here.

Learn How Nonprofits Can Get Involved in Ballot Measures

Nonprofit Vote Oregon often asks voters to make critical public policy decisions at the polls through ballot measures. Often, the result of these ballot questions directly affects nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve. Learn how your nonprofit can take action and benefit from engaging the public around ballot measures in this FREE webinar sponsored by NonprofitVOTE, featuring Stephanie Tama-Sweet, Co-Chair of the Human Services Coalition of Oregon. July 28, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Register now.
