Help Your Organization Thrive During an Executive Transition
Are you a board member of a nonprofit where the executive director just announced she's leaving? Are you a senior manager of an organization where you sense the executive director is burned out? Are you an executive director who's ready to move on to the next challenge or take that long-planned sabbatical? If the answer to any of the above is "yes" then an interim executive director may be just the thing to keep your organization humming along during an executive transition, sabbatical, or unplanned absence. Whatever the reason, an interim can help your organization not just survive, but thrive. Read the full article

Event Planning & Corporate Sponsorship
Special event fundraisers provide a unique way for your donors to demonstrate their loyalty to your organization, for you to acknowledge their support, and for you to cultivate new supporters. Special event fundraising is also a great way to build partnerships with local businesses through corporate sponsorship. Every year corporations spend millions on cause-related marketing and event sponsorship. Sponsorship is a unique and successful way for companies to build their brand while at the same time demonstrating they are good corporate citizens. Many nonprofits are unaware of how to approach a potential sponsor, prepare the information they need for decision-making, and make a compelling case for support. Those nonprofits that are successful in this area understand that sponsorship is a business arrangement, not a donation. Getting corporate sponsorship may seem intimidating, and for organizations with no sponsorship history, downright impossible. But with good planning and plenty of lead time, you can be successful.

Announcements
Daring to Lead Update: We Have a Raffle Winner! Nearly 300 Oregon nonprofit leaders completed the recent Daring to Lead survey, in which the Nonprofit Association of Oregon is a national partner. Those who completed the survey were invited to submit their name in a raffle drawing for a free NAO workshop or nonprofit series. We're pleased to announce Janet Hamada (photo right), Executive Director of The Next Door, Inc. in Hood River, is the lucky winner.
This important research project, sponsored by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, collects important data about the experiences of today's nonprofit executive director. Survey results will be published in April and we will include a summary in our eNews. We took this opportunity to ask Janet a few questions about her experiences heading up The Next Door, Inc., which you can read here.
Understanding Nonprofit Leadership The Nonprofit Association of Oregon is helping promote a research study on leadership in the nonprofit sector conducted by a doctoral student at Gonzaga University. The study will identify a set of executive competencies specific to social service agencies and the results will help inform the development of training programs in this area. Nonprofit professionals are invited to participate in the online survey, which will assess professional development needs. Respondents can also indicate their willingness to participate in a follow-up focus group session that will help identify a competency model for leaders of social service agencies. The survey is available online. For more information, contact Chris Vetter at compsurvey.vetter@gmail.com. The survey is open until February 15, 2011.
Special Fundraising Survey Donors, funders, and nonprofit leaders need good information to make good decisions. There is a lack of current information about the impact of the economy on local and regional nonprofit groups. Please help remedy the situation by completing a survey designed to gather information about current needs and trends. This survey is sponsored by The Oregon Community Foundation, First Independent Bank, Association of Fundraising Professionals-Oregon and SW Washington Chapter, WVDO, and Retriever Development Counsel, LLC. Take the survey.
