Don't Forget to Say Thanks!

Many of you are currently involved in year-end giving campaigns, with letters and emails going out to past and prospective donors. Getting donors is only part of the job of fundraising. You also need to keep them. How you treat your donors and thank them for their support is important, and if done right and done consistently, will result in loyal donors who keep on giving.

Portland Town Hall
The uncertain economy means many things for nonprofits and the people they serve. Oregonians have high expectations for what nonprofits need to accomplish to keep our communities strong. On December 13 in Eugene, we kicked off a Town Hall Series to begin a statewide conversation about the challenge's of today's nonprofits, as well as to share success stories and establish priorities for our public policy work.

The next Town Hall session will be held in Portland on January 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Two World Trade Center, 121 SW Salmon Street.

Join Executive Director Carrie Hoops, Senior Consultant Guadalupe Guajardo, and our host Dave Robertson, VP of Public Policy with Portland General Electric, for a lively and interactive discussion. We encourage you to invite your top volunteers and board members to attend.

Foundation Giving Likely to Increase in 2011, Survey Finds
According to a new research advisory from the Foundation Center, foundation giving is poised to rebound slightly in 2011, after remaining flat in 2010, but will take several years for it to match the peak level recorded in 2008. The advisory is the latest in a series of advisories released as part of the Foundation Center's Focus on the Economic Crisis project, which provides a variety of resources designed to help nonprofits and foundations deal with the challenges of a tough economic environment.

IRS Issues Forms and Additional Guidance on Small Business Health Care Tax Credit
The Internal Revenue Service has released final guidance for small employers eligible to claim the new small business health care tax credit for the 2010 tax year. Tax-exempt organizations will use Form 8941, Credit for Small Employer Health Insurance Premiums, and its instructions, to figure their refundable credit for the 2010 tax year. Nonprofits will then claim the credit on Line 44F of Form 990-T, now available in draft form on IRS.gov. Though primarily filed by organizations liable for the tax on unrelated business income, Form 990-T will also be used by any eligible 501(c) tax-exempt organizations to claim the credit, regardless of whether they are subject to this tax.

For additional information on the Small Business Health Tax Credit, as well as frequently asked questions and other resources, go to IRS.gov.

2010 Fundraising Survey Results: The Worst May Be Over
In October 2010, GuideStar joined forces with the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, Blackbaud, and the Foundation Center to create the National Research Collaborative and conduct an end-of-year fundraising survey.

The results are encouraging: The proportion of participants reporting decreased contributions dropped 14 percent, from 51 percent in October 2009 to 37 percent in October 2010. The percentage who said contributions had increased grew 13 percent, from 23 percent in October 2009 to 36 percent in October 2010. These figures may herald the beginning of an economic recovery in the nonprofit sector, although only time will tell if the trend will continue. For the first time in two years, however, there's cause for cautious optimism about the sector and the economy. The survey report contains additional analysis, including breakdowns by mission category, and numerous charts and graphs.
