Annual Meeting a Success!
We celebrated the official launch of our new organizational identity at our inaugural Annual Meeting on September 30 at the Oregon Zoo. We thank the 189 members, sponsors, and supporters who joined us for the morning. Highlights of the meeting included introduction of our new Board of Directors, elected by our nonprofit members, and a keynote address on nonprofit advocacy by Marcia Avner, Senior Research Associate of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. You can find links to a broadcast of the meeting and to Marcia Avner's presentation on the home page of our new website at www.nonprofitoregon.org.

Get Ready for Election Day
On November 2 citizens around the country will be taking to the polls to vote on ballot measures and to elect our leaders. Voter participation is a critical element of a successful democracy, and 501(c)(3) nonprofits can play an important role in encouraging their communities, constituents, and clients to register and get out and vote on Election Day. There are many resources to help with your organization's voter mobilization efforts:
Alliance for Justice is available to provide you with free technical assistance on the laws that govern 501(c)(3) participation in voter engagement efforts. Contact them at 1-866 NP LOBBY or advocacy@afj.org to find out how your organization can effectively - and legally - mobilize voters.
Nonprofit Voter Engagement Network has checklists and factsheets as well as free posters available for Election Day.
On October 21, Nonprofit Vote will be hosting a free webinar for nonprofits on how you can help to get out the vote on November 2. Register here.
Election Protection provides free online and phone-based support to ensure that voters' rights are protected on Election Day.
These important resources help make it possible for essentially any nonprofit organization to get involved in voter mobilization. Doing so will not only help inform the public of your organization's work, but will also ensure that the important right to vote is exercised to the fullest extent.

Edna McConnell Clark Foundation Launches Competition for Social Innovation Fund (SIF) Grants On September 29 the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation (EMCF) posted its Social Innovation Fund Online Application, starting a nationwide competition to identify nonprofits that are delivering transformative services to disadvantaged youth, that have demonstrated their programs' effectiveness (or are close to it), and that are poised for growth. Matching EMCF's $10 million award from the federal Social Innovation Fund with $10 million from its own endowment, EMCF anticipates making 8 to 10 investments in 2011.
The Social Innovation Fund is a new public-private investment vehicle established by the 2009 Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and administered by the federal Corporation for National and Community Service. For more information, visit the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation's website.

Nonprofit News
Report: The State of Grantseeking 2010 Forty-two percent of respondents to a recent state of grantseeking survey indicated that the grants they had received so far in 2010 were smaller than those received in 2009. PhilanTech and GrantStation recently surveyed 839 nonprofits to learn about their grantseeking activities, successes, and challenges in 2010. The results of the survey indicate that grantseeking remains challenging for nonprofits. Download The State of Grantseeking 2010 to see the full results of the survey.

Rethinking Fundraising Events A new report tells us what donors want when they go to galas and other fundraising events. The majority of event goers expect 50 to 70 percent of the ticket proceeds to benefit the cause. Email is the most efficient kind of invitation. And, they expect to be served hors d'oeuvres if they pay more than $50 for a ticket. What they don't want is long-winded speeches.
The study was conducted by CharityHappenings.org, a website that sponsors a master calendar of charity events. More on the report's findings can be found in an article in the latest issue of The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
