What's HOT in the Training World?

Using social media tools for informal learning! Wiki's, blogging, podcasting, video tutorials, and more! Many organizations have reduced (or cut out completely) their formal training budgets, but informal learning - learning and development that happens within the organization - is HOT!
And easy!
Podcasting as an HR Tool...Of Course!

Let's name some areas that could be improved in ANY organization: internal communication, internal/informal training/education, coaching.

Name an inexpensive, SUPER easy to use tool that can help in ALL of these areas: Podcasting!

Podcast: Audio broadcast that has been converted to an MP3 file (other audio file format) for playback in a digital player.

Ways to Use Podcasting: Record your conference calls for those who cannot make it so they can stay up to date; record the history of your company and put it on your website for recruiting; regular communication from top management on how the company is doing; updates on projects for cross departmental communication; describing policies JIT (just-in-time).

There are endless ways to use this technology! Start using it today!!!!!!!! Of course, call us if you need help...

Start Your Own Wiki

A what-i?! A wiki is a database of pages which visitors can edit live; an open, collaborative community website. Think of it in terms of an online dictionary of sorts that your people author. A wiki's intent is to pool together the knowledge of a group of people to create the best possible resource. A internal wiki makes it easy to swap ideas and information on projects, lowering the need for email (YES!)
  • Up to date project communication
  • Internal knowledge base on a variety of topics
  • Used for internal collaboration on customers
  • Provides a resource for linking knowledge together in one spot
  • A great tool for descriptions all of the acronyms you use in your company!

Remember, if you are going to use a wiki, consult with an expert to ensure you have all angles covered (legal, guidelines, etc.). This can be a wonderful low cost tool within your organization!
Shoot a Video, Make a Valuable Resource!

ABSOLUTELY! Video is in! We know it is working for external marketing, why not use it for internal learning? Small, inexpensive video cameras are a great way to integrate informal communication into your company. This should NOT replace professional video - but can be a nice companion. Ways to use this great, easy to produce tool:
  • Use it for sales training. Follow your best salesperson around in the car. Interview them right before a big meeting and immediately after to find out what they are thinking, how they prepare, etc.
  • Shoot a video on how to use your product. Put it up in your website.
  • Take video of your employees talking about the company culture. Use this in the hiring process.
  • Record monthly talks where your President shares his/her perspectives, thoughts on the business and what is happening. Send the link to all employees.
  • Shoot video of your HR person talking about policy examples.
You don't have to be the next Steven Spielberg. Just have fun with it, be professional and focus on helping your organization succeed!
