3rd Secret - Interview with Brian Grasso regarding youth obesity, children's health and family fun.
PR: Secret number 3: Schools Are Not Currently Part of the Solution.
BG: And they're not. This is an issue that your family faces, and therefore the solution has to be a family-based one. We can't lean on anybody else to solve this problem for us. And that's I think a trap that parents get into a great deal - where they think my kid should be doing physical education in schools, why isn't the PE teacher doing more of this, or why is the school district cutting budgets and therefore cutting PE class?
We have to escape the mentality of blame and of having a crutch to lean on. We are culpable. We are responsible for our children and for our lives and theirs. And we therefore have to be the solution. So we can't look at schools as a solution. We can't look at them as an ally at all. School budgets are being cut. Physical education is being cut. PE is not honored or respected the way it was at one time - you know 20 or 30 years ago. Now it's really just - it's an oversight that most schools barely even put any thought or consideration into whatsoever.
Having said that, school budgets are also affecting the quality of lunches. So, we're not having wholesome nutritious foods anymore. We're having fried foods and processed foods. These are things that we don't want our children to be partaking in, but then we can't rely on the school to do a better job. We have to be culpable, we have to be responsible, and we have to do the job for our children. We are the solution. We can't look at anybody else to be the solution for us.
PR: Very good. And very insightful. I think a lot of parents tend to pass the buck a little bit and I think that secret was one that certainly needed to be shared.
