 Greetings!

5th Secret - Interview with Brian Grasso regarding youth obesity, children's health and family fun.

Healthy Kids are Part of Healthy Families

Pat Rigsby: Let's move forward to secret number 5, and you kind of touched on this with secret number 1, but I think that this certainly deserves even more attention: healthy kids are part of healthy families.

Brian Grasso: You know, Pat, I put this in as secret number 5 essentially on purpose. It serves as a re-enforcement to secret number 1. This has to be a family change. This has to be a top-down approach. Parents and siblings have to get involved in this process as well. We have made a mistake in the contemporary fitness world, and we have essentially pushed that on our general society, which is by and large if we are overweight we have to have a gut reaction or a knee-jerk reaction, and we have to lose the pounds quickly, sweat, sweat, sweat, sweat, and you know crash diet - we have to do things in short bursts. But the reality is - and this is also pursuant to my last point that every kid is an athlete - is that daily activity should be part of everyone's lifestyle every day of their lives.

We are as human beings made to move - we're programmed to move. We need to move. We need to be athletic. We need to be healthy. We need to be active. And so when that becomes a systemic family preoccupation, a daily activity, kids adopt that as a lifelong love. They adopt it as a lifelong reality. They're active every day as a matter of being, because that's what they're used to. So, all families need to strive to be healthy - every member of that family needs to strive to eat wholesome foods and be active daily. And when that kind of mentality and mind shift happens, and it occurs in a top-down approach from parents down, the world changes literally for everyone in that family.

So again, it's a bit redundant from point number 1, and it takes a little bit from point number 4 (every kid is an athlete), but I wanted to reinforce this. These 7 secrets are all critical - this one as well. But I wanted secret number 5 to be a reinforcement that parents have to evoke a policy that every member of their family is healthy, fit, and active. And once you do that, life will change for everybody in that family.
