UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
Rania Matar
Girls in Between: Portraits of Identity
September 6 - November 3, 2012
Opening Reception & Book Signing with the Artist:
Thursday, September 6, 2012, 6:30 - 8:00 pm
PRC Gallery, 832 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston

matar
Rania Matar, Izzy, Brookline, from A Girl and Her Room, 2011.

With her camera Rania Matar poignantly captures the elusive and mysterious moment in a female's life when she is both a child and an emerging woman. Spurred on by her observations from her own daughters, Matar invites her subjects to decide for themselves how they will appear in a photograph and what parts of themselves they are willing to share with others. By establishing what she describes as "beautiful and intimate collaborations" with each girl she photographs, Matar uncovers a world so personal to each girl that the viewer walks away feeling as if he or she has met and had a conversation with each subject. The girls in Matar's photographs, from both the United States and Lebanon, simultaneously hide and expose themselves, exhibiting a dual vulnerability and ferocity completely unique to the female transition from girl to woman. This show features work from Matar's highly acclaimed project A Girl and Her Room as well as never-before-seen work from Matar's new project L'Enfant-Femme.

Nancy Grace Horton: Being 13
September 6 - November 3, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 6, 2012, 6:30 - 8:00 pm
PRC Members' Gallery, 832 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston

horton
Nancy Grace Horton, UNH Hotel, from Being 13, 2009.

In this exhibition, Nancy Grace Horton explores her stepdaughter's navigation through the often monumental year of being 13. With Zoe as her muse, Horton captures priceless moments in the world of a girl who is leaving a part of herself behind while learning to embrace who she is becoming--Zoe expresses a variety of states peculiar to girls in their early teens: defiance, playfulness, embarrassment, youthfulness, boredom, and independence. Horton's enchanting photographs clearly depict her subject's blossoming sense of selfhood while also revealing the artist's deep affection for and fascination with her subject.

Glenn Ruga, Sabaheta, a widow from Srebrenica, living in Ilijas, 2007.

This exciting studio class is designed for photographers who are either working on, or are interested in working on, a serious documentary project and want to engage in a learning environment that will provide consistent feedback and discussion with an instructor and other class members. The weekly class will involve analyzing work by accomplished documentary photographers, developing concepts for documentary projects, and regularly reviewing work from an ongoing project. In addition to the photography, the class will also focus on the writing to accompany a documentary project - an incredibly important aspect - and how best to integrate the images with the text. Guest lecturers will also be part of the class.

Glenn Ruga is the Executive Director of the Photographic Resource Center as well as the founder and director of SocialDocumentary.net

As photography becomes increasingly digital, many photographers are turning to techniques and processes from the dawn of photography to re-invent their image-making.  Join us for a two-part workshop that will introduce you to the world of pinhole photography.

An evening PowerPoint talk (supplemented by books, catalogues, and further resources) with Ferguson will expand your awareness of the world of contemporary pinhole photography.  This presentation will also prepare you for an all-day, hands-on workshop, in which we will make lensless pinhole cameras from ordinary, everyday materials.  Using our hand-made pinhole cameras, we will expose black and white photographic paper or large format ortho film to make pinhole negatives, which we will hand develop in a traditional black and white darkroom.  The resultant negatives can then be used to print positives in the darkroom or by computer.  These pinhole images (both positive and negative) may be embellished with sewing, collage, hand-coloring, etc.

Previous darkroom experience is helpful but not necessary.

Support the PRC Summer Appeal!

The summer is rapidly coming to a close and we still need to raise $7,800 to reach our goal for the Summer Appeal! This is not an arbitrary figure. This is what is needed to assure that we will not need to borrow funds prior to the auction in October. The months leading up to the auction are a fallow time for the PRC and every dollar helps!

We have raised 61% of our goal--help us turn that into 100%!

The PRC needs your support so that we can continue to plan and present the programs that have come to define the PRC. It is only through the generosity of individual supporters who believe in our work that the PRC can continue to be the leading center for creative photography in New England.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 in donations by August 31. Every contribution helps and every contribution is important. The PRC has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of this region for more than 35 years. Your support now will allow us to continue this important work of exploring, interpreting, and celebrating photography in New England.
