neoNEO is Back

Jane Paradise, At the Museum, Melbourne, Australia, 2005

After a hiatus of over a year, our online portfolio feature NEO (Northeast Exposure Online) is up and running again, with a new design and new work by Jane Paradise from her series "Not Quite Strangers." There are almost 70 photographers in the NEO archives; we are working to get them all back into place in the new format. Visit the PRC's revitalized NEO and look for a new portfolio of work by one of our regional members at the start of every month.

Outside Inside is a lecture on the occasion of Bruce Davidson's new three-volume book of the same name, which contains eight hundred photographs from his archives. Davidson's photography spans an intense fifty-year period, from his work as a student in 1954 to two recent works in progress, a series of innovative urban landscapes made in Paris (2006) and Los Angeles (2009). These three volumes celebrate the development of a master of the medium and reflect the artist's own journey of consciousness.

Held in collaboration with The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, with additional support from the Northeastern University Photography Program.

Michal Chelbin: Strangely Familiar
Through October 31, 2010
Opening reception: Thursday, September 16, 6:30 - 8pm
Artist Lecture: Tuesday, October 19, 7pm

Tomaszewski
Jenya in My Hotel Room, Ukraine, Color Coupler Print 2005

"Because I shoot portraits I can say that people are my first inspiration. They are intriguing, mysterious, and unsolved."
-Michal Chelbin (from 9/4/2008 interview on Nymphoto)

Michal Chelbin (born 1974, Haifa, Israel) started making pictures when she was 15, and honed her skills as a photographer during her compulsory service in the Israeli military. Following four years of study in Haifa, Chelbin began pursuing personal photographic projects and traveled in Russia, Ukraine, England, and Israel making the portraits that appear in Strangely Familiar (also the title of her 2008 Aperture monograph; The Black Eye, her new book, is forthcoming from Twin Palms). The body of work on display at the PRC this fall demonstrates Chelbin's search for those displaying a "legendary" quality, which she describes as "a mix between odd and ordinary."

Student Night/Costume Party at the PRC!
Wednesday, October 27, 7 - 9 pm
Photographic Resource Center
832 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston

Open to students enrolled in the PRC's Institutional Members. Bring your work in boxes, on hard-drives, or wear it as a costume; it's Halloween season, after all, and most of the people on the walls in Michal Chelbin's work are costumed, too. Come to this informal gathering to meet students in other local photography programs and to see the great work in Strangely Familiar. Please bring or wear products of your creative imagination and a current student ID.
