October 2007 Fitzpatrick Winery & Lodge eNewsletter
All the News that's Fitz
Greetings!
How will the 2008 vintage be remembered? That's always a question that the media is overly anxious to ask and the answer delivered to the public is predictably 'Good, Better, Best, always superlatives. Regardless of 2007's drought conditions of barely 65% of normal rainfall, enthusiasm, hope and anticipation always encapsulates the harvest atmosphere. Hope you enjoy the pictures throughout the newsleter from the harvest. I know I look hilarious in my wetsuit cleaning out the tanks but someone's got to do it; and believe I haven't said no to any volunteers.

With 14 varieities of grapes and multiple blocks of some varieties, there's winners and losers in a challenging year like this. Grapes are a lot like children, there's lots of personalities/varietals. Just when you think everyone's happy, life isn't a bowl full of cherries afterall we're talking grapes here. And I've got 16 varietals to contend with. But with the harvest now complete I'm happy to report the winners have carried the day albeit with up to 25% less quantity than the very wet abundant previous vintage of 2006. Cabernet Franc was our big loser with barely a bin of grapes harvested from its one-acre block. That bin was added to our Merlot fermantations. We actually started picking back in late August and we had all the grapes off the vines by Tuesday 10/8 just before the rains. That means every tank, barrel and drum is full but one and checkmate is inevitable unless a master flowchart is constantly updated.

There will be a lot of stars from 2007 with the new Sangre de Montana, our dry rose, made from Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Barbera leading the pack. And new for 2007 are Petite Sirah, Barbera and Portuguese port varieties from our new organically grown vineyards on Perry Creek Road. A more accurate evaluation of the 2007 vintage will have to wait for time to play its role. So now its time to find the excitement that originally came with the previous harvests as we begin to release those wines.

New Wines to Roll out over the next six months
here comes the 2005 reds plus more
Bottled over the summer, the 2005 reds will debut over the next 6 months: 2005 Cabernet Franc, 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Grenache, 2005 Syrah, 2005 Zinfandel, 2005 Merlot .

2006's first reds, those of a more delicate nature, the 2006 Sangiovese and the 2006 Pinot Noir will be released in early 2008 too.

And the collection of our Poet's Choice ports will continue to grow with a multiple vintage Wilde's Soul of Man and the Z4 cuvee. I'll keep you posted as to the actual release dates for each wine in our upcoming eNewsletters. One sure way to not miss anything is to become a member of our Wine Fellowship who receive a bottle of everything we make.

Road Rock Roulette November 10th & 11th
  A Flash from the Past!
As many of you can remember the road up to the top of the world at Fitzpatrick's was long and rough. Years ago we dedicated one weekend's sales each year in the Fall to earmark how much we would spend on maintianing our road. We called that weekend Road Rock Roulette and let you help us determine how much to spend based on how much wine you'd buy. It brought a new meaning to Rock n' Roll.

But if you haven't visited us since this time last year or before, you don't realize that the path up to the top of the hill is now asphalt paved making a smooth ride. While we hocked our third child to pave our 1/2 mile long driveway, it's time to bring back Road Rock Roulette. So glide on up Friday, Saturday or Sunday and mix up a case of wine anyway you like for 25% off and we'll put all the weekend's proceeds toward paying down the road debt and patching and winter sealing that beautiful long road to the top of the world

Come Drink from the Land of Youth
Our new 2004 Tir na nOG will be released Saturday October 27th
After all the years of blending our Tir na nOg where only the odd-numbered vintages would seem to work, here comes the 2004 vintage. Based on 85% Sangiovese blended with 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Pinot Noir this wine aged in barrels for 23 months, was bottled in August of 2006 and has bottle-aged for another year prior to its release.

I opened a bottle of this youthful elixir on September 18, 2007 (Diana's birthday) and these are my tasting notes: "The aroma caught me by surprise with cocoa, cinnamon and cardamon spice. Nuances of the spices came through in the mouth with a mellowed dark cherry and chocolate flavor, oak notes, dry, slightly astringent finish with lingering flavors." My impression was this is very intriguing and definitely pulls you in for another glass. I thouroughly enjoyed this bottle of wine.

Like most good things, not everyone will get to enjoy this wine from the Land of Youth unless you move without procrastination because only 119 cases were bottled. Talking about procrastination if you've been thinking about joining our Wine Fellowship, now is the time to get in at the beginning of the next cycle and I'll give you a bottle of this 2004 Tir na nOg as a welcome aboard.

Happy Celtic New Year! October 31st

Yes, as the winter nears and the days go short there's a magical interface of the under-earth spirits making their way above to rule the dark long days of winter. That moment of transisition is now know as Halloween (Sowhain) and gets its roots in Celtic life of long ago. Modern day has put a Madison Avenue marketing twist to bring out the devils and ghouls and lots of sweet sugarry goodies. But lighting a carved out turnip in Ireland gave way to the more appropriate pumpkin in America was to protect the house and barn and all within from the wild shenannigans of those wild spirits of the underworld who literally raise hell for the night.

Another sign of the times is that the holiday season is open and shopping for friends, loved ones and your own holiday festivities throughout the season has started. And we're ready to help you shop. New shipments of Irish goods, Guinness merchandise and the schedule to release new vintages of Fitzpatrick wines are all beginning to happen just in time. Gift Certificates are a favorite and can be customized to meet all your needs. Come visit, Call or email us with your order and/or ideas so we can help make your holidays merry and bright.
