Hot August Nights? Oh Please No!
Greetings!
After all we've been through with the 12 days of hell in July, please God forget the Hot August Nights! Unless you were unemployed and poolside throughout that hot fiasco, 105+ (and I know many of you suffered more) in Fair Play is not pretty. But for the brave souls that came to visit, thank you.

Readying for Harvest is the focus of August. And our vineyards are showing all the signs of a Great Harvest. And by Great I mean both abundant quantity and excellent quality are coming together. Our vineyards look better this year throughout the summer so far than ever before. Dennis is doing a first class job of managing the drip irrigation and parceling out our limited supply of water. The number of Hot August nights could make or break us nevertheless. Don't pray for rain however because unless you can get the rain to fall on the Cabernet but not on the Zin, a good rain at the wrong time could ruin a great Zin.

We'll be bottling like crazy all those wines in waiting. Now with final blending trials complete, whites are cold stable and coming off of bentonite clay for heat stability, it's time to play another round of winery chess. Winery chess is played by plotting each and every move from barrel to tank through filters tank to tank and bottling dates so that never in the flow of wine is there check or worse - checkmate. Check is where the coordination of each step of pumping the wine either to rack, blend or filter doesn't end up in the right tank at the right time and an extra pumping(s) has to occur. Winery checkmate occurs when through no fault of the wine only the winemaster there is no empty tank to make the next move. This is a terrible costly loss of a game which is remedied by either buying or borrowing a tank. Of course there is one sure way of never losing in Winery Chess (and a perfect gameplan for those who have more money than brains), buy way more tanks than you need or may ever use.

So although I do expect harvest to start a little later than normal, I want to be all set to catch our Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in perfect ripeness which may just sneak up on us with some Hot August Nights.

The King and Queen are Coming!
The entire Kingdom is getting things in order
As we go bottle crazy, I thought you might like to know there's a King's Red XII and a 2005 Queen's Gold being groomed and bottled for an upcoming feast. That date is yet to be determined but we'll let you know.

Meanwhile the rest of the kingdom is busy and many new wines are being prepared and bottled as we speak. The poet's will be delighted with the new Z3 Cuvee, the 2004 Morrissey's Journey and finally the 2004 Joyce's Preoccupations. Labels are on their way and releases should begin in September and so on. A new Sangre de Montana will emerge from the cellar soon too. And then the reds of 2004 will enter their bottles for the next and final stage - bottle aging before their future release.

Meet Master Marley
A little small right now but he's awfully cute!
Meet Marley, the fifth in a succession of Golden Retrievers whose service to the Fitzpatrick Estate has been exemplary over the past three decades here in Fair Play. Although Marley's immediate predecessor Ziggy had a very short reign, it's Corky's paws that Marley needs to fill.

Marley was hand selected from a litter of 12 pure bred Golden Retrievers looking for a mellow male with athletic potential for the rigors of farm life.

Merlot Madness

Ever since that pityful loser on Sideways poopooed Merlot, sales have dropped significantly (meaning the big mass market sales). Maybe mass market Merlots are wimpy watery reds. But Fitzpatrick Merlot handcrafted from our two acre Estate vineyards has always been anything but wimpy. Our clone of Merlot goes way back to the times when growers nicknamed Mer-Lot, Merlittle because of its low yields and small berries. Our Merlot's clusters are small and the individual berries are only the size of blueberries. All that skin makes for lots of color, flavor and richness. Our Merlot is more intense than our Cabernet Sauvignon. One thing that Sideways flick didn't let on was that his most coveted wine, Chateau Something, which he finally enjoyed with a burger at a fast food joint was actually 80% Merlot.

So Merlot Madness is all about inviting you to reintroduce yourself to a real Merlot from yesteryear when men were men and Merlot wasn't just drunk by women. Cut your teeth on Our 2002 Estate Merlot and something big off the grill.

Just a little heads up. Our 2002 Merlot, eventhough it was tightly filtered, threw some sediment in the bottle. That shows how packed with color, flavor and body it is. But to serve until the last drop with a little class, I recommend you decant first. And if you don't really know how to decant, please don't hesitate to ask me. Decanting is easy and a wonderful technique to know.

Our Price:$15 During Merlot Madness as low as $9
