May 2006 Fitzpatrick Winery & Lodge Newsletter
April Showers will create outrageous May Flowers
Greetings!
You may ask if all that rain has affected us here in Fair Play. Well there are only a few years in the 32 years that Diana and I have inhabited Fair Play that measure up or come close. The year that broke the drought in 1977 (75 inches), the March Miracle (28 inches in 7 days) and 1998 (rained 29 days that January) to name a few of the few that are remembered as this year's rainy season will be. But the timing of this years rains seem to have worked out near perfect for us.

Remember just back to the last week of February, it was near hot. I was actually planting grapes in my overalls without a shirt. Dennis was rushing around applying fertilizer to the vines. I thought, my God, Spring may spring in a nother week of this heat. Then came the rain and the cool down that goes hand in hand. March - in like a lion, out like a lamb. But March went out with the lion still roaring leaving us with that great picture last newsletter of 10 inches of snow.

By this time I'm way behind with my pruning. I'm sneaking out there between downpours with my foul weather gear each day but I wasn't willing to prune with my mask and snorkel. Normal time for bud-break came and went as winter still held on her chill. I called in a little crew to help me catch up pruning because I knew sooner or later the vines were going to revolt and spring into action regardless of the incessant cold wet weather. But as April kept rolling on, the buds stayed tight until the sun shined bright buying us precious time of no exposure to those unpredictable Spring frosts.

May is moving things right along, but a look at the vineyards right now is like that of a typical first week of April. But that's okay because we have moisture, lots of rain water soaked in through the depths of our soil where it is absorbed and ready for future service much like a battery. Our mature vines probably won't need any supplemental drip irrigation until the end of June. In Fair Play water means everything and so far 2006 has the makings of a great vintage for both quality and quantity.

So as the grapes are loving all sun and water, the wildflowers are beginning their Spring spectacular and you don't want to miss the next 2-3 weeks. Spring 2006 may be the show of the decade.

Buy the Box Club Selections for May
three selected wines each 40% off by the case
Party on with our Rockin' Rhone collection. Prudent shoppers can add a few boxes of some great $20+/- wines for $12 and less per bottle now through May 31st.

Uncork the Rhone magic of our 2002 Grenache. Our naturally limited yields of 2-3 tons from our lone acre of Grenache create a intensity and richness not seen anywhere but from the few, the famous, the great Grenache vineyards of the world. We've nicknamed our estate vineyard of Grenache the Mouse that Roars - from such small and humble scale comes such great wines. The vines are conservatively trained to only two cordons (bi-lateral) and the bunches are small to moderate in size with small blue- black ripe grapes. Separating the Grenchae from our mother block of Syrah are two rows of the less famous secret ingredient of Rhone wines - Cinsault. Cinsault shares a second life as a seeded table great. What Cinsault brings to the bottle is its aromatics and its ability to interact with the more intense grapes like Grenache and Syrah during fermentation.

When we harvest our Grenache with also harvest half the Cinsault and they ferment together. Diddo for our Syrah with the other half of Cinsault. Aging of both our Grenache and Syrah enjoys the company of Hungarian oak, Intermedio (barrels made with staves of oak from Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania) and a bit of American oak barrels.

So the selections for the month of May are the 2002 Grenache for $11.40 ($136.80/case), the 2002 Syrah $12.00 ($144/case) and tasting better than ever the 2001 Cab/Shiraz $10.80 ($129.60). Consider this both your first and last chance at these prices for these Rockn' Rhones because these vintages are soon to become members of the Library of endangered vintages.

Don't Miss the Fair Play Wine Festival
The first two weekends of June
If you haven't received your brochure inviting you to the 23rd Annual Fair Play Wine Festival, please log onto www.fairplaywine.com for all the info.

These two weekends promise to be the highlight of the year for those wine drinkers seeking to engage our local wine industry from a behind the scenes perspective. Besides the obvious private wine tastings, food pairings and live music at some venues, there are special behind the cellar door events too. I'm offering a rare trip into our wine cellars at 11am each day to barrel sample and talk wine where the wine is made. Then back to the wood- fired oven to enjoy our wholesome breads and tapas as complements to our new lineup of wines.

We're introducing a new idea this Festival to make fun of massaging the flow of where everyone decides to go. Picture a BINGO card called VINGO (pronounced VanGogh) which has all the 15 participating wineries listed plus wild card spaces. Follow any line, up, down or diagonal and get each space stamped as you show your VINGO card at each winery. Complete a VINGO on Saturday and another on Sunday and you'll be eligible for a gift of your choice. And you may end up having discovered or rediscovered a new winery that you may have otherwise skipped. Have fun!
