February 2006 Fitzpatrick Winery & Lodge Newsletter
Healthy Hearts, Wine and Chocolate Month
Greetings!
You gotta love February. Love is in the air, chocolate all around, Mardi Gras, a couple of long weekends, the Winter Olympics and even Super Bowl Sunday finds its way into February this year. And in much of California it's the last month of winter weather. So let's enjoy.

And before I fill you in on what's up in February, let me thank you all (those of you who came to our rescue and participated in our Last 5 Days of January Sale). We posted gross sales for those last 5 days of January 2006 that almost matched last year's entire month of January. Thank you very much.

Remember as the fog sets in on the valley this time of year, more often than not we are above the fog basking in the glory of the sun. So when when your skies are gray take a drive to Fitzpatrick's on a hilltop for a day to recharge and remember.

Puppy Love Hurts
Fair Play to Ziggy Marley Fitzpatrick
Who couldn't fall in love with little Ziggy. Cute and fiesty with needle-like baby teeth, Ziggy's presence was scattered all over the frontyard and decks of the Lodge. Everyone could tell there was a new puppy about. As most puppies do, he loved all the attention you'd willingly give plus ask for a little more.Ziggy was in his terrible chews, chewing everything he could find including your extended welcoming hand. He was growing both in body and character and seem genuinely interested in growing up to be a farm dog.

With our shewolf Loba as mentor, Ziggy was learning the ropes of a dog's life at Fitzpatrick Winery & Lodge. Loba in her younger years grew up next door at the Xmas tree farm of the Hick's and became best of friends with our golden retriever Corky. When the Hicks sold and moved to a beach town in Oregon, Loba didn't want to leave and moved in with us up the hill. Being part wolf, Loba was a wanderer and made the rounds of her turf everyday and mostly at night. Well with Corky passed on, Reba (the German short-hair) living in Sac with Hank, Loba really took to little Ziggy with a motherly affection and watchful eye.

But Ziggy's curiosity grew as clumsily as his feet and he began to venture out away from his cozy bed at the Lodge a little more each day to explore the farm with Loba. Days before our family vacation, preparations were made for Ziggy with a collar and tag printed with Ziggy Marley Fitzpatrick with two cell phone numbers just in case he peeked outside the perimeter of our fenced 40 acres when we were gone. A chain was purchased too just in case he had to be restrained.

The day we left for the airport, little did we know would be our last with little Ziggy. Hit by a car just behind us on Myrick Road Ziggy laid dead until Dennis went searching. Nobody cared to call the numbers on the tag. Worst things certainly do happen but the lost of a loved one, human or not, is an unwelcome emotion that's left to the living.

What can I say, we'll miss you Ziggy but never forget you.

All the President's Men
February 18,19 & 20th   I can not tell a lie!
I bet some of you thought I was going to ramble on about King George. No No I was just thinking about Presidents' Day coming and the thought of cherry pie popped into my hungry head. Then came rushing in the song with cherry wine. Okay stop. I cannot tell a lie. I was brainstorming trying to creatively promote our wine for Presidents weekend.

And when I think of cherries, those dark black cherries, I think of our incredible Syrahs. Loaded with dark black cherry character and that's no lie. So I'm going to put together for your enjoyment a retrospective with a vertical tasting of our incredible Syrahs, winners of Golds, Silvers, Bronzes and Best of Shows including the Zachary Jacques Award for the best wine in the annual Rhone wine competition. So don't miss that spectacular and historical retrospective on some of Fair Play's greatest Syrahs, Saturday, Sunday and Monday 18,19 & 20th during tasting room hours. A limited number of cases will be re-released for sale.

2002 Chardonnay Blowout - Save 60%

Time flies and when Diana says it's time, I've got to let it go. So there you have it - 2002 Reserve Chardonnay barrel-fermented in beautiful and expensive French oak for $48 per case not $48 per bottle.

Estate grown this Chardonnay is big. The golden ripeness at which I pick brings forth lots of flavor as well as higher alcohol. Mellowed with fermentation and aging in French oak the style is still rich and a little too much for the non-descript chardonnay sipper. But for some this aggressive style is well appreciated. And at $4 per bottle it should make it easier to choke down for almost everyone.
