Corky as a puppy
August 2005 Fitzpatrick Winery & Lodge Newsletter
Live your somedays Today!
Greetings!
It all started with a note thumbtacked to the siding outside the Fair Play Hardware store - Golden Retriever pups for sale. It was Easter week 13 years ago. I coaxed Katie (11) and Molly(9) into joining me on a secret journey up to Omo Ranch. Wide eyed, their curiosity heightened as we drove down a long dirt driveway and a fenced-in area came into view with the cutest little Golden retriever puppies running about. The pups came running as we entered their space; the girls were giggling as they were overwhelmed with puppy mania. Taking this all in, I noticed a pup contently off to the side, not the runt, but a mellow male waiting to be discovered. Without hesitation we were on our way home with Corky. Corky really didn't get his name until he began greeting tasting room guests the next day. A customer asks what's his name? I said we haven't picked one yet. He suggested "Corky".

We were already thinking of getting another Golden so Colonel KaDuffy (aka Duffy), our canine patriarch who was just entering his Golden years at almost 10, could train Corky about the ways and duties on the farm. Think about it, most young pups don't have a mentor to guide them through the dos and don'ts of a Dog day. Duffy rose to the task with the confidence of a lion king. Corky made it through boot camp with flying colors.

Corky lived a dog's life, actually a dream life of most dogs. His job was to roam his 40 acres daily, sometimes nightly, making his presence known to the local vertebrates. His companionship was required while we toiled in the field and vineyards. Hunting was encouraged and Corky always savored the rewards. Corky developed a keen sense of the Law of the Conservation of Energy. He made no movements not required and surveyed every situation from a vantage point just like a true lion king. Corky had class.

It's shocking to some that our dogs live outside all year long. But Corky loved every minute of it except when the skies exploded with thunder. Corky then sought refuge inside until it passed. In the middle of the winter Corky would find a frozen puddle, crack the thin ice and lay down to cool off. Corky was always on call and rarely ever missed his call to duty. It was very disturbing when just weeks ago Corky did not jump to duty.

The intense heat wave coincided with Corky's lethargy, or so we thought. An overnight trip to the Vet unvieled Corky's mortality. Corky returned home, took his place on the shady lawn to convalesce. By the end of Saturday's very busy tasting room, Corky was missing from his special spot. Katie, cousin Jessa and Uncle Dennis searched everywhere over and over again, widening their circumference with each pass. I joined the search and soon realized Corky would not have gone far and we needed to focus on the smallest of circles. We found our lion king lying in the cool flow of a drippy hose in the shade of the Forsythia. So quick, so unexpected Corky's passing reminds us of the saying, "Live your somedays Today!"

As part of your ticket you get to select a bottle of your choice at each winery. Plus you get a sealed envelope with a playing card in it. By the end of the day you'll have 5 bottles of wine and 5 playing cards. Unless you're smart enough to do some serious wine buying. For each case of wine you buy, you get an extra playing card to better your hand. the first three people at each winery to buy two cases get a joker in addition to their extra card.

Then at 5pm everyone returns to Fitzpatrick's for a wood-fired oven pizza buffet. They'll be fresh locally grown salad and dessert too. Fitzpatrick wines, beer and soft drinks are a la carte.

Upon check-in for dinner, each player will hand in their sealed envelopes. The dealers will assemble your hand, staple it together and post it on the board with your name on it. During dinner the dealers will determin the winners of an incredible array of prizes including a mixed case of wine, an overnight stay in the Winemaker's Suite, winery logo wear, gift baskets, etc. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, worst hand and everything inbetween.

To add up your day you'll have enjoyed tasting wines at five wineries accompanied with snacks, selected 5 bottles of wine, enjoyed a private Pizza buffet at Fitzpatrick's and won your share of prizes and had a lot of fun with the commaraderie of the other players. The ticket price is only $79 each player. And remember there's 14 tickets left so call us now at 800-245-9166 so you too can be a player.
