Book & Family Festival

An outstanding lineup of Latino literary talent will be on hand to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Latino Book & Family Festival on March 28 and 29, 2009.

                    La Dieta

We are proud to have Raul de Molina, the Univision TV host of "El Gordo y la Flaca" present his book "La Dieta Del Gordo" about his own struggles with his weight and the secrets to how he lost 70 pounds without starving. His television career, spanning 16 years, includes hosting and reporting for well-known programs such as "Primer Impacto", "Ocurrió Así", "Hola América", "Club Telemundo", as well as primetime specials and his own productions. His outstanding television performances have earned him multiple Emmy awards.

Maria marinWe are also excited to present special guest Maria Marín. Ms Marín is the author of  "Mujer sin Límite" (Aguilar, March 2008). She is considered one of the leading motivational trainers and keynote speakers on the subject of "Personal Empowerment" Her captivating presentations and compelling messages have earned this international acclaimed speaker many honors that identify her as one of the most powerful, charismatic and persuasive voices for self-improvement among women. Her national newspaper column "Mujer Sin Límite" (Women Without Limits) is published weekly in the Top 30 markets in the U.S & Puerto Rico. It focuses on personal growth for women. She also appears weekly in the national television program "Despierta América" as the motivational expert of the show.

Also scheduled to be featured is Susan Orosco, public Susan Oroscospeaker for over twenty four years, and author of "Latino Power". Her inspirational and highly motivational talks are often fueled with stories of her childhood upbringing in an all white neighborhood and schools. Her stories spring from the challenging experiences her parents and five brothers endured during her youth. She teaches Latinos to overcome the challenges of being Latino in an all white world, and gives step by step instruction on how to achieve the deepest of desires and most cherished of dreams. In "Latino Power" Susan teaches the seven powers all Latinos have within themselves upon which to build an empire.

Also on hand at this year's festival will be Xavier Serbia, radio personality, financial analyst and original Menudo band Xavier Serbiamember. Xavier launched XavierSerbia.com, a Spanish language financial site helping the Latino Community to develop the real-life skills needed to succeed in a competitive economic system. The site includes videos, Q&A financial section "PAX", blog "La Esquina X", and in-depth financial opinions.

The Latino Book & Family Festival is free to the public and takes place at Unity School. The event will be open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. A new feature introduced last year is a motivational speaker's program called Readers Are Leaders....Leer Es Poder that invites leaders from different professions to read a passage from a children's book or from a book that inspired them and speak about how books influenced their lives.

11th Annual International
Latino Book Awards
May 28, 2009

There is still time to get in your nominations for the 11th Annual International Latino Book Awards  (ILBA).

The 2009 ILBA to be held at the Javits Center in New York City on the afternoon of May 28. Each year the awards ceremony is held in conjunction with BookExpo America, the country's largest book publishing industry trade show.

Publishers, authors, publicists and all friends of literacy are invited to nominate their favorite books from 2008.
There are 62 categories open for nominations: English and Spanish language categories covering everything from fiction to self-help to children's and young adults. Books must have been published in calendar year 2008 to be eligible. For the 2009 awards we are excited to announce the addition of four new categories, including Best Young Adult Sports/Recreation (A11 & A12), (B19 & B20), a general fiction category, Best Popular Fiction (C37 & C38), Best Gift Book (B19 & B20) and Best Graphic Novel (C47 & C48). Please consider all the categories carefully before deciding which ones best fit your submissions.

You will find nominating forms and instructions in both English and Spanish here. The nominating process lasts until March 13, when the books will be sent to our diverse panel of judges, but if you get your entries in prior to January 16 you are eligible for an "early bird" fee reduction.
Books are the pathway to a better future for our kids. Please join me in supporting this effort.
