Dear OUTreach friend, Wondering what's up this week? Well...you are invited to a fun volunteer appreciation party (catered!) tomorrow. DO join us, if you are able! After dinner we'll have a visit from some street outreach workers from the Volunteers of America (bring your questions) and a special announcement about a new OUTreach project that we are undertaking with our friends from Mormons Building Bridges. Please do us a favor - when you see an OUTreach volunteer, tell them THANK YOU. We couldn't do the work we do without them.

Did you know that just being LGBT puts you at risk for some health problems?
Let's talk about it!
- LGBT youth are 2 to 3 times more likely to attempt suicide.
- LGBT youth are more likely to be homeless.
- Lesbians are less likely to get preventive services for cancer.
- Gay men are at higher risk of HIV and other STDs, especially among communities of color.
- Lesbians and bisexual females are more likely to be overweight or obese.
- Transgender individuals have a high prevalence of HIV/STDs,victimization,mental health issues, and suicideand are less likely to have health insurance than heterosexual or LGB individuals.
- Elderly LGBT individuals face additional barriers to health because of isolation and a lack of social services and culturally competent providers.
- LGBT populations have the highest rates of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use.

Announcing: Safe and Sound
| | |
We'll be making a special announcement tomorrow at the Volunteer Extravaganza, but you, gentle reader, get a preview of the new OUTreach program, and next week we'll tell you more about how you can help:
"Mormons Building Bridges is dedicated to encouraging practicing members of the LDS church to reach out in Christ-like love and support of LGBT people. We are deeply concerned about the teen homeless population along the Wasatch Front--knowing that many of these young people are gay Mormons who feel they have nowhere to turn. We are excited about Ogden OUTreach's efforts to build a network of families who are trained and ready to open their homes to this population. What better way to show unconditional love for those in need! Mormons Building Bridges will be proud to partner with OUTreach in making this vision a reality."
