April 24, 2012                                  OUTreach News!
Wednesday and Thursday OUTreach
3:00-7:30 for ages 14-23
In addition to the fun activities and classes OUTreach always has, there is an important need that we will address this week in the wake of another local LGBT youth suicide on Monday, April 23rd.

Tomorrow, April 25th, psychologist Dr. Health Ambrose will conduct a special session on dealing with the aftermath of suicide, plus instruction on what to do if you fear someone might try to take their own life.  We will form a student task force to plan for a community event to publicize the suicide epidemic in Northern Utah.

The suicide rate for youth in Utah is EIGHT times the national average.  OUTreach will take a proactive role in addressing this tragic loss of life, and asks for your support as we plan for community events to raise awareness and find solutions.

Scheduled, fun programming for this week:

Community Gardening! 4:00

Shanae Larson, incoming president of the Ogden Junior League will share the happy news that OUTreach youth now have a plot at OASIS!  Shalae will tell us all about why community gardening is so important, and about the cool things that the Junior League is up to.

Teen Health and Leadership Class
Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30.
Did you know that this innovative program is a pilot project of the Federal Department of Health and Human Services?  And OUTreach is the only LGBT center in the United States that is a participant in what is hoped will become a model for other locations to emulate.  The idea is that a core group of exceptional youth learn about health, particularly as it relates to relationships, and then the youth teach their peers and the larger community how to live healthy lives.  The instructors from the Weber-Morgan Health Department are fabulous, and the classes are fun, fun, fun!

Heather Ambrose, PhD, LMFT, LPC  is an amazing therapist who volunteers her time counseling youth, adults and families at OUTreach.

Want to learn more?  Stop by and chat with Dr. Ambrose on Wednesdays!

Special "Bullied" Event UPDATE

OUTreach and its partners, Ogden PFLAG, Weber State LGBT Initiatives and SAGE presented a wonderful film and panel that was attended by a crowd that overflowed the Ogden Library main Branch Auditorium.

Panelists spoke openly about their experiences with bullying, and unknown to all of us, a local LGBT high school student took his life in response to bullying that very day.  OUTreach and its partners are now planning a community event to highlight youth suicide and what can be done to prevent tragic loss of life.  Watch the OUTreach facebook page for announcements
