OUTREACH LGBT and Allies Summit Speaker Line Up!
| | |
OUTreach will sponsor its first annual youth summit to be held July 27 and 28 at Weber State University. This summit is the first of its kind in northern Utah, with three tracks of speakers and workshops:
- By and for LGBT and allied youth
- For parents and supportive adults
- For professionals (including school teachers, administrators and counselors; mental health and other supportive professionals)
Our theme is building bridges and supporting youth through:
- Youth leadership and self expression
- Strengthening families
- Preventing homelessness, suicide and risky behaviors
- Providing options for youth experiencing homelessness
- Better health, wellness, educational and professional options for youth
This week we feature the work of Lambda Legal! Our Summit speaker, Shelbi Day, is an attorney who served as co-counsel in the ACLU's landmark case in which a Florida appellate court rendered Florida's law prohibiting gay men and lesbians from adopting children unconstitutional. As a result, Florida's adoption ban is no longer enforceable. Shelbi now is a Lambda GSA specialist, and will be speaking about supporting students' rights as well as the landmark work Lambda Legal is involved in for persons with HIV/AIDS.
This photo released by Lambda Legal shows Maverick Couch, a gay student whose southwest Ohio high school prohibited him from wearing a T-shirt designed to urge tolerance of gays is suing the school, saying it's violating his freedom of expression right. Lambda Legal is supporting Maverick, and supporting all students who wish to exercise their rights.
"Schools should be places of learning and development and that includes a student's right to express who they are and what they believe in," stated Eliza Byard, the executive director of the Gay Lesbian & Straight Education Network, in a press release released on Tuesday: "It seems however, the school district is engaging in the very kind of bullying that creates unsafe school climates."

New to our stellar line up and also speaking at the LGBT Summit:
Don't miss it, July 27th and 28th at Weber State University. We are excited to report that Continuing Education Credits will be available for professionals attending the summit! |
