CFGNB is serving your community!
Greetings!

Over the past few months we've provided updates on New Britain's Campaign for Grade Level Reading and Chronic Absence Initiative. In this edition, we're proud to announce that these efforts by so many school administrators, counselors, teachers and community-based organizations have earned New Britain a finalist position for the National Civic League's All-America City Award.

Interested in learning more about how you and your family can wisely invest in our community? Be sure to attend the Market Outlook Seminar we're offering June 19 in partnership with The Investment Fund for Foundations.

Based on their productive May meeting which focused on veteran's issues, Catalyst Fund members will soon issue a Request for Proposals to organizations in Greater New Britain that support our veterans.

Finally, we're pleased to introduce a new section, Featured Friends. This month, Frank Miller, CPA of Miller, Moriarty & Company, PC, relates how one family chose to leave a meaningful legacy through CFGNB.

We wish you a warm, relaxing and safe summer!

Sincerely,
Jim Williamson Signing Off

"When our clients, the Rogers Family of Southington, wanted to commemorate the Orchard's 200th Anniversary and honor the legacy of the late Frank "Bud" Rogers, the Orchard's 6th generation owner, by establishing a scholarship for local students, my recommendation was that the family entrust an undertaking of this nature to the Community Foundation. The Foundation has a good track record with a number of other funds in town, is very experienced in managing endowed funds like these, and people have confidence in them."

New Britain's Plan to Improve 3rd Grade Reading Selected as Finalist for National Award

An ambitious plan to ensure that more of New Britain's children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade has been chosen as a finalist for the All-America City Award, sponsored each year by the National Civic League.

In addition to promoting higher quality teaching and a more seamless support system for parents, New Britain's Campaign for Grade Level Reading aims to improve reading at 3rd grade by increasing school readiness, reducing chronic absence and addressing summer reading loss. Read more online.

Catalyst Fund Members Explore Service, Funding Priorities for Veterans

Whether they're returning from Afghanistan or Iraq, served in Vietnam or are remembering their World War II duty, those who serve our country deserve effective responses to their unique social, economic and cultural needs. In an effort to focus this year's grant on a program that can enhance existing supports available to Connecticut's veterans, 45 members and guests of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB)'s Catalyst Fund met last month at the Hospital of Central Connecticut to educate themselves about the priority issues that affect this diverse population.

Homelessness, mental health issues, dental care, career development and permanent housing are just some of the priority concerns for our state's veterans. Read more about the discussion.
