Showrooming Challenges Brick-and-Mortar Retailers

Last December, at the height of the Christmas shopping season, Amazon aggressively promoted its price-checking mobile phone application by giving shoppers five percent off items on Amazon that they scanned while in brick-and-mortar stores. The application, which compares store prices with Amazon's, brought the practice of showrooming - already very familiar to retail store clerks - out of store aisles and into public prominence.

We've all scratched our heads at the launch of brand extensions such as Cheetos Lip Balm or Harley-Davidson perfume. These may be novel and fun and generate some easy, short-term revenue, but they do little to enhance the reputation of the mother brand. They don't last and soon are all but forgotten.

A "NEW BEGINNING" FOR KATIE ON ABC7
Katic Couric returned to daily television on Monday, September 10th, with the premiere of her new nationally syndicated talk show "Katie." The one-hour program is filmed in front of a live studio audience in New York. Similar to her "New Beginning" in daytime television, all month "Katie" is celebrating women who are reinventing themselves, including guests Sheryl Crow, Chelsea Handler, E L James, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Simpson, Sofia Vergara and Wendy Williams.
You can find "Katie" on ABC7 WJLA weekday afternoons from 4-5PM.

SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL ON ABC7 A HIT
Saturday Night Football on ABC's season opening Cowboys Classic at Cowboys Stadium featuring Alabama and MIchigan was a smash hit among viewers in the D.C. DMA. The game was #1 for its time slot in the key demographics of M18-34, M18-49 and M25-54 with a rating of 5.0, 5.0 and 5.5 respectively. In addition, the ratings for this year's season opener among M18-34 increased 194% from last year's opener and among M25-54, ratings increased by 45%.

ABC7 WELCOMES JACQUI JERAS TO GMW
Jacqui Jeras, former CNN Meteorologist, has arrived at ABC7 WJLA and in the coming weeks she will be signing on with "Good Morning Washington."
Jacqui is a seasoned forecaster who has covered all of the huge weather stories for the past decade at CNN, including coverage of Hurricane Katrina and "Snowmageddon."
"I'm really looking forward to becoming a part of the D.C. community" she said in her announcement. WJLA general manager Bill Lord added, "She's a smart, credible forecaster with a warm, engaging personality."
