The Board's Role in Fundraising

Too often, the board's role in fundraising is poorly defined. Even during the recruitment and orientation processes the board's role in fundraising is rarely discussed. It is not uncommon to hear people say, "I am excited and willing to join the board - but I don't want to ask for money" or, "thank goodness we hired a Director of Development for our foundation - now we can all get back to the important board matters at hand."

Unlocking Your Board's True Potential

The roles and responsibilities of boards and their members have been well researched and written about by experts in the field. Based upon my experience, knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. To unlock your board's true potential, boards need to constantly re-examine their own performance and make the necessary improvements that have been identified through their assessment process.

This article will address two important aspects of improving your board's governance:

  • Selecting the Board Chair, and
  • Reappointing Board Members.
