FOOD FOR THOUGHT 

JANUARY 2012 

Greetings!   

 

Steven ClintonWe hope you enjoyed the holiday season and begin the New Year with enthusiasm and excitement.   The FIC has ambitious goals for 2012.  We will enhance our mission to integrate efforts and foster collaborative research that targets the major challenges in the broad field of foods and nutrition.  The FIC will continue to fund interactive research pilot projects on a competitive basis, an effort that is now yielding publications and new grant proposals.  In the last year, FIC initiated support for the OSU obesity initiative and in 2012 will provide similar support for the topic of food security.  The challenge of providing healthy food locally, nationally, and globally in an era of expanding  populations suffering economic disparities is a complex issue that transcends OSU's diverse colleges and can be successfully addressed by interactive programs composed of our talented faculty and students.   Our educational efforts will also expand in 2012 with funds supporting undergraduate and graduate student research and education.  As always, we are grateful for your support and feedback.  Whatever you resolve to do in 2012, we wish you the best for the New Year.

STILL TIME TO PLAN YOUR TEAM'S SUBMISSION FOR FIC'S NEW $50,000 GRANT PROGRAM

The FIC Innovation Initiatives will provide our largest financial support to date for multi-college teams to undertake new collaborative research projects. Proposals that address significant problems in food quality, local food security, the food industry, or obesity are welcome. We look forward to your innovative ideas.

  • Application deadline: February 21, 2012, by 5 PM
  • Funds available: April 5, 2012
  • Budget: Up to $50,000 in direct costs for one year per award. Up to $200,000 may be invested among four awards.

NOMINATE A FOOD INNOVATOR FOR THE NEW AWARD

Please nominate candidates for the inaugural Food Innovator Award ($3,000 honoraria plus travel)who meet the following criteria:

 

Criteria

  1. Nationally or internationally recognized for innovative, multidisciplinary food research
  2. Available to offer a compelling keynote address at the 2012 FIC annual meeting and willing to interact with Ohio State faculty, students, and staff during visit (Note: FIC will work out the scheduling details)
  3. External to Ohio State

To nominate, email the following to [email protected] by 5 PM on Tues., Jan. 31:

  1. Name, title, and affiliation
  2. Brief explanation of why the nominee is a strong candidate. Where known to you, please comment on (a) the innovative and multidisciplinary nature of the nominee's accomplishments in food research, (b) nominee's public speaking skills, and (c) nominee's likely willingness to engage with faculty and student groups during the visit and how the visit will benefit the FIC community.

Summary: GOALI promotes university-industry partnerships by making project funds or fellowships/traineeships available to support an eclectic mix of industry-university linkages. Special interest is focused on affording the opportunity for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students to conduct research and gain experience in an industrial setting and interdisciplinary university-industry teams to conduct research projects.

Warner Grant for Sustainable Agriculture

FAO Food Price IndexFAO Food Price Index

The FAO Food Price Index is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities. It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices (representing 55 quotations), weighted with the average export shares of each of the groups. The full data set is downloadable. Obesity: Catalogue of Surveillance Systems  

The National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research recently added four datasets to its rich catalogue of obesity data sets.

 

-The National Survey on Recreation and the Environment (NSRE)

-The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP)

-Food Attitudes and Behavior (FAB) Survey

-National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS)

ROBERT SCHARFF ESTIMATES FOODBORNE ILLNESS COSTS $77.7 BILLION A YEAR

Robert Scharff The cost of foodborne illness in the United States is now estimated to be up to $77.7 billion a year, according to an analysis by Ohio State University researcher and FIC Member Robert Scharff.  

 

Although the new estimate, published in the January 2012 issue of the Journal of Food Protection, is a significant reduction from the researcher's initial estimates in 2010, "these numbers are still big," said Scharff, an economist and researcher with the university's Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). "The decrease doesn't necessarily reflect a decrease in foodborne illness. Primarily, it's due to methodological changes by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in how the incidence of foodborne illness is measured. Both the CDC numbers and my new estimates of related costs are more accurate -- that's the important thing."  Read on...

 

HUA WANG UNRAVELS CHALLENGES OF DRUG-RESISTANT BACTERIAHua Wang


For years, medical professionals and the livestock industry have made great efforts not to overuse antibiotics, but drug-resistant microorganisms continue to thrive.  
 

Hua Wang thinks she knows why: Antibiotic usage is just one of the factors causing resistance, she said. 
 

"Antibiotic resistance is a complex issue. Just targeting one source is not enough to take care of the problem," said Wang, a researcher with Ohio State University's Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and an associate professor of food science and technology.  Read the full article. 
 

 

MARTHA BELURY AND OTHER OHIO STATE FACULTY RANK FIRST IN NUMBER OF AAAS FELLOWS  

Martha Belury  Ohio State University leads the country in the number of faculty just elected to the prestigious role of Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

 

The university has ranked first or second each year for the past decade in the number of scholars chosen for this award, one significant because the Fellow designation is based on an evaluation by peers in the same academic discipline.

 

Twenty Ohio State faculty will be welcomed in a ceremony at AAAS' annual meeting in February. AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society.  Read on...
