Community Meetings
It's tough to find something for everyone but we are trying hard.
Lots of residents make inquiries about where to donate old windows, doors and such but it's hard to put people together and worry about posting their phone number etc so we've added a "Lost & Found" page. Try it out! Let us know if it works for you or if you have suggestions to change it.
The auction site is up and running with our first successful auction. We plan to put some great stuff up there so keep an eye on it.
RPNA will host some nice events in the months to come and a community meeting will be announced soon. We will be posting a more thorough explanation and follow up to these meetings with important guests and speakers.
Check out the site when you have time and please give us some feedback. |

Albertsons to Close Belmont Heights Store |
RPNA along with other associations, city representatives and residents are concerned about vacant properties especially of this size. We will be seeking help to fill this store with a needed market, bank or other service for Rose Park. Please take a moment to send us any ideas you have about what we need in our neighborhood or what you'd like to see go into this soon to be vacant store.

Earlier this week, Albertsons' parent company announced that they would be closing 18 of the store's underperforming Southern California locations, including one in the Belmont Heights neighborhood of Long Beach. Supervalu-which also owns Osco/Sav-On Pharmacies and Lucky Stores-will be shutting down a total of 60 stores this year, citing steep losses across all of the chains it operates, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Belmont Heights Albertsons on Redondo Ave. between 6th St. and 7th St. is the only Long Beach casualty of the closures and is expected to be gone by December. Albertsons' other four Long Beach locations-Downtown, Belmont Shore, Los Altos and the one on the corner of Long Beach Blvd. and Willow Ave-will remain open indefinitely.
Though the loss of one store in Long Beach is small comparitively to the number of grocery stores that exist in the city as a whole, Supervalu's announcement is another sign that nationwide, supermarkets are on the decline.
Big-box retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart-as well as smaller, specialty stores such as Whole Foods and Tesco's Fresh & Easy-are slowly chipping away at the market share, drawing in customers with one-stop shops, lower prices and pre-prepared items for busy families with tight budgets. In Long Beach, a reduction in fresh food purchases at grocery stores could also be the result of the rise of increasingly accessible weekly farmers markets across the city.
"The traditional grocery store is something of a dinosaur," Jim Prevor (a food analyst at PerishablePundit.com, a website that follows the fresh food industry) told the Times. "The core question is whether it can be reinvented and re-created or whether we have to have a lot fewer of them."

Is your old house one of the vintage homes in Rose Park that is celebrating its centennial birthday this year? If it was built in 1913 or earlier it is turning 100 this year. In Rose Park and Rose Park South Historic Districts approximately 100 homes will turn 100 years old, or older, this year! The 100 year old celebration is enthusiastically supported by local businesses Look Graphics, Alford's English Gardens, and Richco Gates which have supplied a limited number of attractive lawn banners that are available free to residents living in these centurion homes.
Just like Michael and Joey shown below installing their new birthday lawn banner. They moved into their charming 1911 home on St. Louis in 2005 and just four years later received a Rose Park Neighborhood Association House Beautiful award, which recognized and celebrated the fine work the two had done in creating a beautiful home. They love living here for the walk-able neighborhood, the fun things to do nearby and the great neighbors.
Please register your home at the UPS store at 7th & Redondo to pick up your lawn banner. RPNA will need the address and the year your home was built. Membership in Rose Park Neighborhood Association is not required for the banner, but we'd love to have you on board! We are open to all residents of the area, including our neighbors in apartments and condos!
Please share your 100th Birthday Party photos on the Rose Park facebook page! For further information about RPNA and what is going on in your neighborhood, go to www.rpna.org. |

Long Beach Celebrates Library Card Sign-Up Month |
Love the Library?
As the school year gets under way, parents and students are invited to visit a Long Beach Public Library location for one critical school supply - a library card. Since 1987, thousands of public and school libraries join together in a national effort each September for Library Card Sign-Up Month. "Libraries play an important role in the education and development of our children, and obtaining a library card is the first step on the road of lifelong learning," Mayor Bob Foster said. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifelong learning. Family Learning Centers at Long Beach Public Libraries offer after-school homework help and skill building; parents can also use these centers for education and job support. Long Beach Public Library, founded in 1896, serves a diverse urban city of close to half a million people. The Long Beach Public Library system includes Main Library, eleven Neighborhood Libraries, and online library services. With an emphasis on providing free and equal access to information and support for lifelong-learning, the Library offers books, media, downloads, databases, and Internet access. The library also provides storytimes, cultural events, and movie screenings. For information on services and events, please call 562.570.7500 or visit www.lbpl.org.

Light Up Rose Park: Home Security Lighting |
|
Increased security lighting in the neighborhood is a way for Rose Park residents to deter crime and compensate for the occasional old tree blocking your streetlight.
Criminals will probably avoid streets in our neighborhood that are well lit.
Just imagine a safer street after dark!
Please consider purchasing solar motion activated lights that have a range equal to or longer than the distance from the light to the sidewalk. As people walk along at night they will be illuminated as they go, making the street safer and helping iwatch participants.
Your opinions on this issue are valuable and desired. To comment on this please email

Using Go Long Beach Phone App to Repair Your Curb |
|
If you use a smart phone please consider downloading the free app Go Long Beach.
The city of Long Beach can respond to a curb repair GoLongBeach request if the damage is less than 5 feet in length.
This is great news for us! Even if your street is not scheduled for complete repair you can have the deteriorating curb repaired.
There are several issues that can be reported to the city and the application sends them to the correct department. Report graffitti, damaged sidewalks etc. easily and the response if incredible.
Graffitti is usually removed within 24 hours!
Thank you Long Beach!
