Security Lighting by Emily Stevens

I've had lots of inquiries about home security and one of the most often asked about is lighting.  The LBPD is aided by lighting and it is proven to deter breakins.

About 2 years ago I had this idea that it would be really fantastic if, as you entered Rose Park the lights followed you.  I think I was watching a futuristic movie at the time.

After all, our neighbors are not robbing us. It's people entering Rose Park and leaving.... with our stuff.

So if our alleys were lit and our front porches were lit by movement I think we'd be less inviting to criminals and our watchful neighbors could help us more.

With this in mind RPNA has put together a "package" for you.  Here is some information to get you started:

What light works:

The model that has the best ability to adjust brightness and motion range is the Zenith SL-5718-WH.  It is $44.97 at Home Depot and Lowes  HomeDepot Link  It is a wired light but the solar ones we tried were not very good.

This light is pointed down (not at the street or our neighbors), set on dim and adjusted to reach the sidewalk.  It works like a charm.

Who can install it:

I called a handyman (contractor for over 25 years) who lives in Rose Park on Raymond.  He has excellent references from your neighbors and is very interested in helping us get the neighborhood better lit.  He charges a minimum of 2 hours ($30.00 an hour) to install a wired light.

His name is George Loustaunau  920 Raymond Ave. 562-234-9988

How will I pay for it: Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal's office has provided us with information on the city of Long Beach Neighborhood Services rebate program for security lighting.

The RPNA called Neighborhood Services today and obtained a copy of the grant application and other details on this program.  Please call the NRC for complete information but if you are wondering if you will qualify, here is some information for you:

  •  Do not purchase materials or take any action until you are approved for the rebate.
  • You must use their original blue form when applying.  You can obtain an original form by calling the Neighborhood Resource Center (562-570-1010) or email info@rpna.org and we will send one to you.
  • The lighting rebate is $500.00 for product & labor and they will also pay for the electrical permit you will need if the lighting is wired. If you use solar power you do not need a permit.
  • The income qualification for a rebate listed here is the total maximum annual income for people living in the residence. (A husband, wife and one child is 3 people):
    •  One person in residence $46,400.
    • Two people $53,000.
    • Three people $59,650.
    • Four people $66,250.
    • Five people $71,550.
    • Six people $76,850.
  • This is a rebate program and you must furnish a receipt for the completed services in order to be reimbursed.

E. 7th St. UPDATE

East 7th St - The street is all torn up from downtown east to Junipero! Soon though this area will be transformed with improved intersections, the new paving and maintained trees along the street. The East 7th St. Collaboration has been in overdrive with help from Suja Lowenthal and Robert Garcia's offices to make these improvements. The E7SC is also working on bus stop art and façade improvements from Redondo to Alamitos. We are very appreciated of JMS Architecture's willingness to assist our efforts pro bono - we'd not have made it this far and so quickly without their enthusiastic technical support. Garden of the Mind

Garden of the Mind - the three year effort to facilitate interaction of our local students, parents as well as residents is expanding its efforts into youth mentorship. Why? Our secondary education system is built on the premise of homework. And as simple as this might seem, we have parents who are willing but not able to provide sufficient homework support. So Garden of the Mind is partnering with Power4Youth a decade old organization in downtown to help us offer this successful program in greater Rose Park. But we need to find a location; and of course can use some more mentors. Please email Gretchen at thegardenofthemind@gmail.com

History project - the summer that RP puts its history 'out there'. Rose Park Neighborhood Assn. received a grant from the LB Naval Heritage Memorial Trust Fund - this summer we are working with Dr. Christine Jocoy, geographer to complete a demographic snapshot of the East 7th St. area based on the 1920 and 1930 census. Plus we recently received a bound collection of maps outlining the housing tracts in approximately 1910. We have more work to do and need help getting all this great information on to the project website. Want to help? Contact Connect2RosePark@gmail.com
