Suja's Second District Update

 CITY COUNCIL

Suja received unanimous support from City Council for legislation involving Utility Cables and the Long Beach Heritage Museum on Tuesday, June 19.
In her motion involving Utility Cables, Suja asked the City Attorney to determine whether existing city ordinances can be amended or a new ordinance created to regulate the aesthetics of utility cables or wires in residential neighborhoods and report back to Council within 60 days. The issue of blight caused by utiility wires stems from concerns expressed by the Rose Park Neighborhood Association and shared by other neighborhoods in the Second District and citywide.

Suja's other motion asked the City to assist the Long Beach Heritage Museum in finding storage for their collection of historic memorabilia and documents in service to past, present and future residents of Long Beach. Among its collections, the Long Beach Heritage Museum has the only roller coaster car left from the famous Pike Cyclone Racer, the last drug store soda fountain from the Harriman Jones drug store on Broadway and Cherry, an eleven-foot long, solid redwood surfboard used by Long Beach lifeguards in the 1930's, chandeliers from the Pacific Coast Club, church pews, City Hall files, an old wooden public telephone booth, household furniture & kitchen appliances, silverware from the famous Hotel Virginia dining room and thousands of photos, rare photographs, and historic documents donated by residents capturing life in Long Beach during several eras.

Nominate Someone You Know for the 2012 Distinguished Rose award!

On Sunday August 19th 2012, the Rose Park Bluegrass Festival will be designating 4 new outstanding recipients of the coveted "Distinguished Rose" award. We need to hear from you, about the people who you think make Rose Park such a wonderful place to live. Whether it's somebody who advocates for neighborhood improvements, somebody who regularly participates in neighborhood clean ups, or somebody who merely helps their next door neighbor take out their trash, we want to know who and why. Recipients will be honored on the day of the festival with a one-of-a-kind framed certificate, a beautiful red rose and a commemorative brick to be placed on the walkway in Rose Park. Past winners include:

  • Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal (2nd District Councilmember)
  • Emily Stevens (President of the RPNA)
  • Gretchen Swanson (Restoration Trade Fair)
  • Officer Claudia Lopez (LBPD)

There is no age requirement, but nominees must be residents of Rose Park or Rose Park South (subject to verification). Please submit your nomination(s) for the 2012 "Distinguished Rose" award, along with a brief description of why you think they deserve this honor.

*Please Note: the organizers of the Rose Park Bluegrass Festival and GDH INC ultimately decide all award winners. The RPNA is a collaborative partner of this event, but does not decide the recipients of the "Distinguished Rose" award.
