Long Beach Police Department Debuts CommunityWatch Program at the Neighborhood Resource Center

Seventy-five Long Beach residents learned about the Long Beach Police Department's new Community Watch Program, Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the Neighborhood Resource Center.

Community Watch is a crime prevention program that involves individual groups in the community working with Long Beach police to affect crime. This workshop informed residents about how to initiate Community Watch on their block and how to work with the Police Department to make our neighborhoods and the City of Long Beach a safer placeto live.

Residents had the opportunity to meet Long Beach Police Department Deputy Chief Robert Luna and Division Commanders Mike Beckman, East Division; Josef Levy, West Division; Galen Carroll, North Division; and John Benedetti, South Division.

Patrol Division Police Services Specialists (PSS) assigned to coordinate the Community Watch Program were on hand to answer questions.

LBPD Reaches Out to Rose Park

Recently our new LBPD Commander Mike Beckman has called to notify the RPNA when there is a serious crime or activity in our area.  This kind of communication is vital to a safe neighborhood.

It is also our responsibility to participate in this communication.  The Long Beach Police Dept is trying to help us by encouraging us to call them if we see what we think might be criminal behavior.

This is the way communities "take back their neighborhood".  When we call, a patrol car can be sent our way.

Please help the neighborhood become safer.  If you see someone acting suspiciously, call the LBPD at 911.

A note from Commander East Div. LBPD:

I am completely impressed with the extent of community engagement in the East Division, evidenced by your individual and collective efforts as residents, businesspersons, and stakeholders. I have found through our communications that as vast, diverse, and complex as are the community interests of the East Division, the crime concerns and quality of life issues of all eastside citizens are mutually shared regardless of cause or calling.

In the spirit of partnership, transparency, and community cohesiveness, beginning in January 2012, I will host quarterly East Division Community Gatherings at the East Patrol Division facility, located at 4800 Los Coyotes Diagonal. Engaged citizens from the entire division, including representatives from neighborhood and business associations are welcome to attend. I believe this will be an effective forum for me and my staff to convey contemporary crime and quality of life information, as well as a means for attendees to share and discuss the broad interests of our neighborhoods as a whole community.

Gatherings will be hosted in April, July, and October 2012.

Light Up Rose Park: Home Security Lighting

Increased security lighting in the neighborhood is a way for Rose Park residents to deter crime and compensate for the occasional old tree blocking your streetlight.

Criminals will probably avoid streets in our neighborhood that are well lit.

Just imagine a safer street after dark!

Please consider purchasing solar motion activated lights that have a range equal to or longer than the distance from the light to the sidewalk.  As people walk along at night they will be illuminated as they go, making the street safer and helping iwatch participants.

We received many calls and emails on lighting.

The model that has the best ability to adjust brightness and motion range is the

Zenith SL-5512-WH-C.  It is $39.99 at Home Depot and Lowes.  It is a wired light but the solar ones we tried were not very good.

This light is pointed down (not at the street or our neighbors), set on dim and adjusted to reach the sidewalk.  It works like a charm.

If you have more questions on how or where to install them email info@rpna.org.

Thank you to all the Rose Park residents that signed the petition for change in the overhead cables covering our neighborhood!

Now we are going to ask you to do it again through our online petition for change.

This request/complaint will be sent directly to Verizon executives in an effort to draw attention to their responsibility for these unsightly cables.
