Art & Greenery At The 4th Annual Restoration Trade Fair
Sunday Sept. 25th 9:30-4pm ˇ Luther Burbank ˇ 4th & Junipero, Long Beach, CA
Long Beach, CA (September 13, 2011) - In addition to all the wonderful home restoration/renovation resources available at the upcoming Restoration Trade Fair is a focus on art, craft and all things alive and green. Here are some of the artisans and highlights we're proud to feature:
Garden of the Mind Edible Tour & Mosaic Project:
Garden of the Mind is rolling out the carpet at our Burbank Demonstration Gardens. As this is an educational fundraiser (proceeds go to the Garden of the Mind's ongoing effort), your $5 admission goes to a great cause but also buys you: an edible tour of gardens with LBCC's Jorge Orchoa, an opportunity to 'make a plant' at the Garden booth, and create history with a mosaic tile that will memorialize our efforts at the school. Mosaic artist Dawn Mendelson will lead a group activity using recycled materials to create a tile that will be on permanent display in the gardens. This is one in a series of artistic efforts highlighting botanist and school namesake Luther Burbank's philosophy, including the most recently completed, massive 3-panel mosaic of The Mother Tree, one of Burbank's hybrid innovations.
Long Beach in Film: For the first time, the Restoration Trade Fair will be showcasing a film on our city featuring the recent WWII documentary, Long Days Working Hard, by CSULB's David Kelly that was commissioned by LB Naval Heritage Trust Fund. If you missed it recently on PBS, this is a great opportunity to catch it. Plus, we'll be showing movies about The Pike, original footage of the 1933 LB earthquake and a short about the Jergin's subterranean walkway. Check the event website for show times TBD.
Arts & Crafts: This year we have an entire area devoted to crafting:
ˇ Arts & Crafts Basket Weaving - featuring basket maker and teacher Margaret Schulz, who focuses on the ethos of the Arts & Crafts Movement of the early 20th century. www.basket-craft.com
ˇ Adam's Forge Blacksmithing - Their primary mission is to raise awareness, teach skills, preserve and advance the craft, and broaden and grow the blacksmithing community. adamsforge.org
ˇ Garden of the Mind - 'Make a Plant' - this min-event is an off-shoot of Burbank's Science Fair. Led by Green LEEDS Associate, Tiffany Tedesco, participants will craft a plant from recycled elements.
ˇ 2 Girls At Art - Long Beach artists Sarah G. Vinci and Dana Pariseau-Beach will display small art works perfect for adding that bit of panache for your home including photographs, Croquis paintings and greeting cards. (A Croquis is a quick sketch or design used to generate new ideas for textile designs as well as other mediums.)
ˇ Primal Flower - an offbeat, charming and eclectic, vintage home décor atelier and eco-friendly florist on 3rd & Elm offers local, sustainably grown and organic flowers and unique plants and succulents, plus vintage collectibles, local art and handcrafted items and found objects. We also specialize in eco-friendly weddings and parties and offer design workshops.
ˇ Artist Jeremy West: This So-Cal native makes treasures out of things others would simply throw in the garbage. Simple everyday objects transform into whimsical art-whether it's a slab of wood tattooed with creepy creatures in nothing but a Sharpie, or Wonderlandesque "Primal Flowerz" created out of Illy brand coffee tins, old vinyl records and other random refuse. You've seen his work at festivals like the recent Funk Fest and Buskerfest downtown, and hung on walls at local coffee shops and Primal Flower on 3rd & Elm.
