"If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows."  

1 Timothy 5:16

God has called the church to take care of the widows and orphans, but the responsibility is to first fall on their families. If the widow or orphan has no family than the church is suppose to step in. God wants us to take care of our families. It is our responsibility to help them and provide for them, when they are not able to do it themselves. Just as the Church should not shrug off its responsibilities, nor should we as individuals. The first Commandment God gave us with a promise was "to honor our mother and father". To forget about them in their old age when we have the ability to help them, and release them to the care of the Church is not honoring them. Take care of the family God has given you. Be a blessing to them!

"Honor widows who are really widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God."
