Vicky and Birthday Kids

Technology...

At King Street Center, we work hard to level the playing field for kids in our community. We are thrilled that with the support of the A.D. Henderson Foundation, The Richard E. and Deborah L. Tarrant Foundation and People's United Community Foundation, we are now able to put learning tools such as laptops, ipads, and powerful desktops to use at the center every day.

Creating art. Telling stories. Completing homework. Assessing literacy skills. Embracing Xtra Math. Making our own Tutor Training Videos. All of these possibilities are now a welcome reality through the Technology Initiative fully launched this month. (You should see how excited the kids were on the day of arrival!) Thank you to our generous supporters who made this possible and for the volunteers and staff who help our children to use technology responsibly.

P.S. Yes, like all families, we worry about too much screen time, too. Read below for how we keep King Street kids on the move!

 Imagination Playground

King Street Center is thrilled to have received Imagination Playground (TM) this month as a gift from the Green Mountain Children's Museum. We will take very good care of this treasured learning tool - and look forward to lots of imaginative play in the coming months and years both here at the center and throughout the community! Check out the fun!

Vermont Commons School Flying Turtles Volleyball Team is continuing their annual tradition of delivering one-on-one and group instruction for our Afterschool Excellence students. The kids LOVE the attention, get great exercise, learn new skills - and now volleyball has become a favorite sport! Thanks, VCS!!

Volunteer of the Month

Sarah, Hibo, Gabe

Congratulations to Sarah Thyng, this year's King Street Center Mobius Mentor Award Winner

Sarah Thyng was matched with Hibo, an energetic, funny, and strong-willed young girl back in 2006. Over the years they have done all kinds of activities; from making dinner together to swimming, from spending time at the park to working on homework. They especially enjoyed shopping for Christmas gifts for a child in need. "After 5 years, I feel like we are old friends who can tell each other anything."

Hibo says.  "She has taught me that if you try and take a chance you can do almost anything. Sarah encourages me to try things, and says if you do your best you will get the best out of it."
