Even Start students assemble to receive their diplomas at ACLAMO's 2012 graduation ceremony.
Executive Director's Corner: From the broken heat records to the heated political rhetoric of the upcoming elections, the Summer of 2012 has gotten off to sizzling start!
In June ACLAMO held its 2012 Even Start Graduation ceremony, an inspiring rite of passage for our preschool-aged students and their mothers. We also created a wonderful new partnership with Carp Dental Associates to make free dental care available to our low-income families. The story in this month's Personal Profile column about Marisol, a mother in our Even Start program, reminds us once again of the critical medical needs within our community.
Our Summer Bridge education program for elementary and middle school students is in full swing. We will detail that successful program and its progress in the upcoming July/August Summer newsletter.
As the summer flies by, the enormous financial challenges that ACLAMO will face this fall are getting closer. Due to dramatically reduced public funding, we need donations more than ever before. Please consider a one-time gift to ACLAMO, or through your ongoing support by joining Amigos de ACLAMO at www.aclamo.org.
As always, muchas gracias!

ACLAMO Holds 12th-Annual Even Start Graduation Ceremony

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman presents diplomas to Fila Rivera and her son, Kevin, in recognition of their educational accomplishments.
Against the backdrop of a perfect spring day, ACLAMO Family Centers hosted its
12th-annual Even Start Family Literacy Graduation.
The 18 mothers and their children prepared for weeks for the event, making dozens of decorations that adorned the lobby, writing and practicing speeches to present during the ceremony, and cooking an enormous spread of traditional Mexican dishes to share with all who attended.
Excitement filled the air as the children entered the room dressed in their caps and
gowns, walking together to the traditional pomp and circumstance march. Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman during her address encouraged the students to continue pursuing their dreams through education, and the families were very grateful for her words of support. The mothers and their children then presented their program of song and dance. Mothers Fila Rivera and Edna Alvarado gave moving personal testimonials, in English, to the assembled guests.
The event culminated with the awarding of the diplomas by Ms. Ferman to the children and mothers who had successfully completed the year-long Even Start Family Literacy Program. Following the ceremony, all were treated to the authentic Mexican
feast.

ACLAMO/Carp Dental Associates; Partners in Oral Health
Amy Hernandez receives her initial dental exam with dental assistant Geralyne Guthridge, and Dr Brian Carp of Carp Dental Associates of Norristown.
"Now open wide!" exclaimed Dr. Brian Carp to seven-year-old Amy Hernandez. Amy, a student at ACLAMO Family Center's Summer Bridge Program, is one of many new participants in an exciting partnership between ACLAMO and the local dentist.
Dr. Carp, owner of Carp Dental Associates, a dental office serving the Norristown community for more than 15 years, started a program to offer free dental exams and x-rays to low-income local families. On the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, in coordination with ACLAMO, Carp Dental schedules these exams as a way to promote dental health to those who may not go to a dentist because of the cost.
"We are grateful to Dr. Carp for his generosity," said Juan Guerra, Executive Director of ACLAMO. "Through this program he is encouraging good dental hygiene as a part of overall health."

Personal Profile: Marisol Monterrosas
Three-year-old Ramiro patiently sits with his mother Marisol
The health needs of ACLAMO families are varied, and because of language and economic barriers, often neglected. Such was the case of Marisol Monterrosas.
Seven years ago, Marisol had participated in our Even Start Family Literacy Program with her son, Brian. She returned to our program this year with her three-year-old son, Ramiro.
Linda Maldonado, ACLAMO's director of early childhood education, noticed that Marisol had a suspicious-looking mole on the side of her face. Linda suggested to Marisol that she see a dermatologist, but Marisol resisted, saying that she could not afford it. Marisol indicated that her husband was unemployed at the time, but with the start of his seasonal work in the spring she would follow up with her doctor.
Concerned that the mole appeared to have grown, Linda took the time to explore other options. New employee Anne Javsicas said she had some contacts at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Dermatology, and that she would try to arrange for a consultation. Anne was able to make an appointment for Marisol at Penn's Puentes de Salud (Bridges of Health) clinic at no charge.
Several weeks ago, Linda drove Marisol and her family to the Philadelphia clinic for the consult. The attending dermatology resident agreed that it was suspicious, removed the mole and had it biopsied. Fortunately, the results showed the mole was benign. The area has since healed perfectly.
"Everyone was so kind to me," said Marisol, "from the staff at ACLAMO to the doctors at Penn."
While her results were positive, many low-income individuals don't receive such support and put off necessary exams, which can lead to serious medical consequences. Thanks to the help from friends like you, we continue to offer such programs to families in need.
