Summer Shift

Although the snow is still visible across the high mountain peaks, the green grass and trees, along with the abundant dandelions and lupine blossoms confirm that we have indeed shifted gears into summer here in Alaska!

I'm also reminded of the change as it's midnight while I'm writing this note, but yet it's still not dark outside yet.  Thankfully Karin made some wonderful blackout shades recently, so we haven't been noticing the lingering sun and early morning sunrises quite so much as we did last year this same time.

At MARC, the gears have definitely shifted into higher gear as kids Bible camp and work team flying has started in earnest.  Hopefully you saw the flyer we prepared and recently sent out talking about Bible camp flying.  If we had to pick a favorite ministry highlight, I think it would have to be camp flying.

Kids growing up in remote Alaskan villages have an incredibly challenging life, and we love being able to provide transportation for them to "escape" to Bible camps across Alaska during the summer.  Please take a moment to read the camp flyer, if you haven't already.

You might find this hard to believe, but MARC expends more than $100,000 each summer in fuel expenses for camp flying.  For the remote villages we support, it averages about $378 to get each kid to camp.  But... that's Alaska:  there are no connecting roads to most villages, the distances are vast, and the terrain makes all other forms of transportation other than air extremely difficult... or actually impossible in most cases.

But trust me... it's so worth it!  What a great thing it is to see the difference a week at camp makes for so many kids.  If you can, please help make a donation to MARC's "Kids to Camp" fund.  It's a great way to become personally involved in making a true spiritual transformation possible here in Alaska.  Every small gift helps make a difference... and what a great way to help a kid spend part of their summer!

On a different note, I hope you'll take a moment to read just a bit further below about our new business venture.  We mentioned this in passing previously, so we wanted to make sure everyone knows what we're up to.  See below for the full scoop.

We hope your summers are going well for you so far, and we hope some of you will join us for  a visit here in Alaska soon (while it's warm).

Thanks for keeping us in your prayers!

Love,

David & Karin

Our New Business

As we finish our second year with MARC this summer, we're approaching that point where we need to begin increasing our financial income to sustain our ability to remain here in Alaska.  Although the original intent was for MARC to eventually put us on salary, God has blessed MARC greatly over the past year, and Karin and I don't want to "drain" any of those new resources away from the many incredible ministry efforts ongoing.

In considering many other options and knowing God had blessed us with so much leadership experience prior to MARC, Karin and I ultimately concluded it would be best stewardship of God's past investment in our lives to begin our own consulting company.  This "on-the-side" business option allows us to remain in Alaska and continue working with MARC, allows Karin to continue her psychology studies (that she's really enjoying!) at the local college, and allows me to remain "current" in my past career field.

The biggest start-up investment for this endeavor is time, and I have been burning a lot of "midnight oil" consolidating 23 years of procurement experience into a training seminar and other services that I can offer to companies.  So for the past month or so, I've been working primarily from home, while at the same time doing my best to remain on top of all my development responsibilities for MARC.

As many home business owners can probably attest to, you don't work less when you begin working at home... in fact, you end up working a whole lot more... especially when the sun doesn't really go down at all here in our Alaskan summer!!  :-)

Although I will probably have to travel some to make the business work, we're excited about this opportunity.  As long as we can generate a little bit of work each month, the extra income will sustain our ability to remain here in Alaska until God leads us to other opportunities.  I expect the business to grow gradually, so hopefully we'll be able to adjust with it as we go forward.

Our primary client "targets" will be advertising agencies who sell their services to companies that have professional procurement teams involved in the buying process.  So, if you know anyone in a leadership position within an advertising agency, please help us make a new contact!  And, if you have any questions that I haven't answered well enough, feel free to ask.

Please keep us in your prayers!  Ask God to provide prospective clients.  And, ask God to bless our efforts to remain involved with MARC.

We'll let you know how it goes!!

Thanks for praying,
D&K
