Greetings!

As we approach the new year, it is good to be reminded of the strength and courage that we all have within.

This month's newsletter features three inspiring examples of people have worked fearlessly for peace and reconciliation.

For kids and those who love kids, we offer a poem reminding us of their innocence and potential.

Please check out the blog for more stories, and join the dialogue on Engaging Peace.

Recovery through forgiveness

By guest author Elina Tochilnikova

Eva Mozes Kor, a "Mengele Twin" who survived the genetic experiments at Auschwitz, chose the non-standard route to recovery: forgiveness.

For this she failed to win acceptance from the survivor community. As have her predecessors and contemporaries in social change, she has had to define her own path, and in that, defined herself.

In 2010, with the assistance of Boston College Professor Dr. John Michalczyk, I interviewed Eva. She explained that in 1993 she was offered an opportunity to meet with former Auschwitz Nazi doctor Hans Munch, a former colleague of the infamous Josef Mengele. Although emotionally wrought by the... Read more...

Vaclav Havel, crusader against tyranny

Velvet Revolution 1989
Velvet Revolution 1989
December 18, 2011 saw the passing of Václav Havel, an exemplar of moral engagement.

Havel was a playwright and poet who became the leader of the opposition to Communist rule in Czechoslovakia starting in the 1960s.

He helped launch the nonviolent "Velvet Revolution" in Prague on November 17, 1989--which began with student protests, expanded to include labor unions, and led to his election as president of Czechoslovakia on December 29, 1989.

For his role in the Velvet Revolution, Havel has been recognized as a leader comparable to Nelson Mandela and... Read more...

Liberate THIS, Part 7

By guest author Dr. Dahlia Wasfi

I searched the Internet for everything that I could find out about Rachel Corrie--who she was, where she came from, what brought her to challenge bulldozers in Gaza.

(And I wondered, my God, what kind of courage does that take?  I couldn't even muster the strength to stand up to bigoted doctors in my workplace.)

I found a picture of her.  She was so beautiful: all-American-looking, blonde, blue-eyed young woman. She was thin, like a dancer.  She even looked natural and confident in the... Read more...

Little Child, by guest poet San'aa Sultan

Father and daughter

Little child, your dreams are my own and they will come true,
Your courage and strength shine through all that you do,
Your innocence sparkles through every word you say,
I wish I could give you an even brighter day.

Little child, you are strong and you are wise,
This world is yours, I see it through your eyes,
My prayers lie with you, and I will never leave,

All I ask is that you smile, and that you begin to believe.
