Greetings!

The events in Tucson on January 8th have rocked our nation and drawn renewed attention to the power of violence in our society.  Our lead story in this newsletter addresses the social context which can produce a "lone" gunman.

Ironically, we recently commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr., a champion of peace,  who did not survive an assassination attempt.

Engaging Peace

will continue to explore not only the violence of war, but the importance of fostering peace in daily society.

Jared Loughner "flag" with propaganda

  • An estimated 1,740 children died in 2008 as a result of abuse and/or neglect. Yet the financing of social programs to address such problems has been constantly under attack;
  • The annual murder rate was 29th among the 31 countries... Read more...

On Monday, January 17, we celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr., the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and an exemplar of moral engagement. He demonstrates all the criteria for moral engagement:

What is a "just" war?

(by guest author Michael T. Corgan)

Judge's gavel

What makes a war "just"?  Is a just war also a "legal" war?  As generally accepted, just war theory imposes six criteria for identifying a war as just:

  1. The war must have a just cause
  2. It must be initiated by a proper authority
  3. It must be a last resort
  4. The use of force must be proportional to the object to be achieved
  5. There must be a chance of success when one uses force; and
  6. The ensuing peace, if attained, must...  Read more...

Children and Youth Peace Corner

Father and daughter sitting on grassWe have a real treat this month for the Children and Youth Peace Corner--a link to an absolutely beautiful set of lullabies from around the world.

These are likely to be as relaxing to our readers after a hard day as to all of the children looking for soothing and solace as they deal with the challenges of development.

After all, what could be more peaceful than a lullaby?
