Dear Subscriber,
Welcome to the February 2012 issue of the EPN Consulting Newsletter that is received by hundreds of selected professionals in Europe. In these days Europe is being facing tough climate conditions that have caused serious disruptions to the Transport industry (in particular Urban Transport and trains) and to the Electricity supply in wide areas of many countries. Focusing on Transport, despite a number of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) already in place and some in design phase and despite the amazing Intelligent Transport Systems that manage Transport networks in many European cities and regions, widespread snow and ice conditions were able to cancel all benefits in a matter of hours. For example, high-speed trains serving Northern Italy were blocked in the middle of countrysides for hours and no information was given to passengers. On Fri 03 and Sat 04 Feb 2012 the city of Rome was paralised by a few inches of snow. Temperatures as low as -20/-30 'C created major disruptions in Central and Eastern Europe. Maybe we have lost the real focus of the day-to-day life. We invest a lot of time on designing advanced transport control systems (and they are amazing really) but we don't take into account that some snow and ice can destroy the perception populations may have gained about these efforts. It is of no interest having excellent systems that are bound to collapse when temperatures drop below zero. We should think of what is being happening in these days and hopefully re-focus our goals... Changing subject, a referendum recently held in Croatia gave green light to joining the EU on the 1st July 2013. Although the rate of "yes" was remarkable, the percentage of people who went to poll stations wasn't that enthusiastic. Interesting matter to explore further in details. Finally, the EC published two interesting Calls for Tenders about Energy and Transport: - Support to bio-fuels deployment (deadline 09 Mar 2012) - Provision of services of legal, economic and technical assistance in the field of energy and mobility and transport policies (deadline 16 Mar 2012) Details can be found here.
