From the Principal ...

Dear Holy Cross Community,

We are fast approaching interim time, and the year is filled with energy.  We look forward to next week, our Spirit Week, where we all take time to celebrate being a Gael!  Our students are showing strides in scholarship, service and character each day; a certain sign our mission is achieved.

Thank you so much for your positive response to the launching of our new website (www.hcrs-va.org).  If you have not visited the site, we encourage you to do so.  We hope you find this new tool user-friendly and informative.  The goal of this website is to highlight our school to community members while allowing our families to move directly to our RenWeb portal for internal communications (forms, grades, etc).  We direct our families to the icons at the top of the site which allow direct access to our calendar, the lunch menu and the RenWeb portal:

Thank you for your continued support as we move the school forward.  Your children are our greatest blessing!

May God bless you,

Patti Culbreth

A Sweet Treat for Our Students

Adi McCauley, HC alumna and owner of Magnolia Foods, has graciously offered to help us celebrate our students' birthdays by offering a FREE cupcake on their big day.  Students will receive a gift certificate following morning announcements and all they need to do is take it to the store to redeem their most delicious treat.

We began celebrating this program on Wednesday and

students who celebrated their birthday since the beginning of the school year will also receive theirs.  Students who celebrate a summer birthday will receive theirs by the last day of the school year in June.

If you happen to stop by Magnolia's, please express your thanks to Adi!

There will be no Tuesday communion Service on Tuesday, September 18 as Deacon Gordon will be out of town.  Please join us again on Tuesday, September 25.

Homecoming 2012

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, September 22nd, from 8 until 11:30.  We need volunteers to help decorate after school Friday until 5:00 and again on Saturday from 10-12.  If you can help, please email me at [email protected].  Thanks!

A Big Gael Thank You to Darlene Eichmann for putting together the goodie bags for the Holy Cross Church picnic on Saturday!  We appreciate your help so very much.

Nature Notes from Dr. Justice ...

Dual Enrollment Biology is conducting a Field Ornithology Project. The goal is to use the biology and distribution of our local birds to provide insight into biological processes.  As part of this project, we are compiling a list of birds that can be found on the Holy Cross campus along with their activities (e.g. molting, breeding, overwintering, migrating, etc.).  Here are the species we have spotted in the first month.  Most birds were molting, but a few early migrants appeared.

1) Turkey Vulture
2) Mourning Dove
3) Eastern Bluebird
4) American Crow
5) Carolina Chickadee
6) Tufted Titmouse
7) House Sparrow
8) Black Vulture
9) White-breasted Nuthatch
10) Carolina Wren
11) Ruby-throated Hummingbird
12) Red-bellied Woodpecker
13) Eastern Wood Pewee
14) Red-tailed Hawk
15) Cedar Waxwing

Please help spread the enthusiasm for this project!  We will be posting regular updates in the e-crossette.
