"HIT THE BOOKS" READING INCENTIVE
Our spring reading incentive is underway and with one month left, Holy Cross elementary students are hitting the books to earn a "home run" in reading and free tickets to the May 26th Hillcats baseball game as well as other prizes from Sylvan Learning Center. Bookmarks and information went home a few weeks ago. Each class has its own guidelines to follow.
Because the game is on the night of our "Beauty and the Beast" performance, we will have a reward for those who complete the reading but are in the play. Please contact Mrs. Main if you have any questions or have lost your bookmark. main_h@hcrs-va.org ,434-847-5436 x 110

1st Grade News
First Grade had a wonderful retreat at Tabor on Wednesday! Father Rush joined us in the chapel and we made crosses for Deacon Gordon and the prison ministry. Each child read a Bible verse as they lit a candle during our prayer service. Praise Jesus for all our blessings!
First grade will enjoy a field trip to the Peaks of Otter on Thursday, April 26th. :)
Holy Cross Music Updates!
The Holy Cross String Orchestra will be performing at Our Lady of Peace in Appomattox this Friday, April 27th at 6:30. The church will be having a dedication ceremony for the new addition that they built onto their church. All orchestra students (excluding fifth graders on their field trip) need to be at the church by 6:00. Students are responsible for bringing their own instruments, music, and folding music stands. The address of the church is: 2938 Oakleigh Ave Appomattox, VA 24522. In order to represent our school well, Mrs. Barnes asks that all students wear their school uniforms.
Mrs. Barnes will start offering private violin, viola, cello, and string bass
lessons this summer at Holy Cross to rising second graders and up. It will be $20 per weekly half hour lesson. Please email barnes_a@hcrs-va.org if you are interested. Mrs. Barnes is willing to start private lessons before this summer if there is interest.
We are pleased to announce that Holy Cross now has a High School Girls Choir! The choir mainly consists of junior girls and meets during first period on Wednesdays. Look for upcoming choir performances during Grandparents Day and the NHS/NJHS induction ceremony!
Third grade's retreat at Tabor, a day of spiritual reflection and service, will be Tuesday, April 24, 10:30 - 2:00. We will celebrate Mass with Fr. Rush, eat lunch, and break up into small groups for various activities. Parents are welcome to join us.
Second graders will travel to the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke, Thursday, April 26. They will tour and learn about the first Ronald McDonald House and the continued service these homes provide for families of sick, hospitalized children. Also the class will deliver the pop-tabs collected this year by the Holy Cross students and friends of the school. These tabs are recycled by RMD volunteers. The money earned from the recycling helps provide daily necessities for the residents, like laundry supplies, toothpaste, etc., and often is used toward the monthly heating bills at the house. So continue to save your tabs for our Ronald McDonald Houses!
Save the date second grade mothers: "Muffins for Mom," our annual Mothers Day Tea, will be Friday, May 11, in the second grade tearoom @ 2:00.
Date change: May Crowning will be Thursday, May 17, @ 2:00 at Mary's Grotto, with Fr. Jim Gallagher. All welcome to attend.
