Congratulations to Chase Laurent who competed in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition in Richmond, VA on Saturday, Feb 25th.  Chase made 20 out of 25 free throws and won third place in his age group.  Congratulations!

Congratulations to Catherine Conlon who represented Holy Cross at the Annual News and Advance Regional Spelling Bee.  Catherine finished in 6th place, competing against over 40 middle school students.  Way to go Catherine!

MS and HS Families, on Friday, March 9, we will host our second speaker in our HEALTHY CHOICES SERIES.  Investigator Morgan Callahan from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office will speak with middle and high students on the dangers of technology like Facebook, emails, texting, etc.  She will focus on Cyber Safety.  We will run an afternoon assembly schedule and the speaker will begin at 2:15.  The speaker's remarks will address the students; however, parents are welcome to attend.

MS and HS parents are reminded that we will not hold a Media Lab Study Hall after school beginning Monday, March 5.  The purpose of the study hall was to allow for students to have an opportunity to work on school assignments while they waited for later practices.  As our spring sport practices begin directly after school, we ask that athletes report directly to their coaches. All other students should arrange for rides home at dismissal time.  The exception to this plan is the girls soccer team who practice at 5 pm.  Coach Barlotta will hold a study hall exclusively for his players who need to stay after school to wait for the 5 pm practice.

SPORTS NEWS

Students playing Spring Sports at Holy Cross are asked to attend a Spring Sports meeting with a parent on Tuesday, march 6 at 6:15 in the cafeteria.  Mr. Mitchell will share athletic expectations and parents and athletes will meet with their coaches.

Directly after our Spring Sports Kick-off Meeting, we will hold the Winter Sports Awards at 7 pm in the cafeteria on Tuesday, March 6.  We ask our winter athletes, coaches and parents to attend. Punch will be served afterwards.

MS and HS Families,

We will host our second speaker in our Healthy Choices Series on Friday, March 9.  Investigator Callahan from the Bedford County Sheriff's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force will speak to our middle and high students about cyber safety at 2:15.  The talk will be directed to our students, but parents are welcome to attend

Congratulations to the Holy Cross Regional School Forensics Team!

Once again, the students represented themselves well. Qualifiers for this VIRGINIA CATHOLIC STATE TOURNAMENT included the Public Forum teams of Brian and David Loftus, and Meghann and Daniel Casker, with Meg and Dan placing 2nd in this State Competition to continue on to the NATIONAL CATHOLIC FORENSICS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT. Drew Dickerson performed in Dramatic Interpretation and Joe Bruzek and Grayson Kosciusko placed 5th for Dramatic Duo. Well done Holy Cross GAELS!  Special thanks go to outside Judges, Peggy McFadden and Nina Rezai, volunteering for HCRS as "clean" Judges and donating their time to these students.  Thanks also go to Greg Casker and Mary Hansen for serving as "school" Judges.

News and Updates for the Upper Grades:

In October the Middle School had their Annual Lock-In.  A special thanks to the following: Dr. Stokes and Mr. Rony for their help setting up, Dr. Combs and Mrs. Trent for the yummy pizzas, Mrs. Malkiewicz for the scrumptious breakfast, True Value Hardware in Appomattox (Mark Malkiewicz) for the popcorn and snowcone machines and to the MANY volunteers who gave of their time.  We could not have successful events like this without you.

The Winter Sports Pep Rally was a HUGE success.  The cheerleaders did an AWESOME job leading the event, the students were LOUD and SPIRITED and the teachers and coaches did their best attempting to keep up with the Seniors.   A special congratulations to the high school for being the most spirited and the Freshmen and Senior class for winning the relay. Middle and High School students received their RICE Bowls last week in Religion class.  The theme for this year is "For I was hungry," and it reminds us that when we serve our brothers and sisters in need, we also serve Jesus.  The Catholic Relief Services encourages families to pray with their families and faith communities, fast in solidarity with those in hunger; learn about our global community and the challenges of poverty overseas; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need.  The RICE Bowl collection will continue throughout Lent.  If giving, please return your RICE Bowl to your Religion teacher.  NJHS members will be collecting them.  Thank you for your support.

March 17 will be the Annual Middle School Etiquette Dinner.  Please remember to RSVP.

Saturday Morning League
Saturday morning baseball and softball league has started.  If your son or daughter would like to learn the basic of the games, have them join us every Saturday from 9:00 to11:00.  Grades 3rd to 8th are welcome.  Hope to see you there.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE FEBRUARY READING/

DR. SEUSS'S BIRTHDAY

Elementary students celebrated meeting their February reading goal, along with Dr. Seuss's birthday on Friday, March 2nd. As part of the celebration, the students had cake, prizes and a special guest reader, Mrs. Culbreth, who read favorite Dr. Seuss books during library time. They also received a coupon for a trip to Mrs. Main's "Treasure chest". We are so proud of all of the reading that our students did. Stay tuned to next week's E-Crossette for a report of total pages and minutes, as well as the top readers in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade who competed in the Sylvan Learning Center contest!
