SUMMER DAY CARE FAMILIES,

Holy Cross will not offer summer day care during the 2012 summer.  We apologize for any inconvenience to our families, but we are planning to head in new direction with summer options.  We hope to offer "themed" camps for several weeks of the summer (like our very popular Lego Camp run by Karl Rony).  More information about those options will be available this spring.

Forensics News

The Holy Cross Forensics team traveled to Madison County for the Virginia District Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.  Joe Bruzek and Grayson Kosciusko made their debut in Friday's Student Congress as Senators while Ora Arthornsombat, Lizzie Main and Meghann Hansen participated as Delegates in the House of Representatives.   Speech and Debate events began Friday afternoon.  Sam Winters, Gabie Braxton, Meghann Hansen and Daniel Casker participated in the Public Forum Debate events and Ora Arthornsombat participated in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate.  Joe Bruzek and Grayson Kosciusko performed in the Duo Interpretation event and Drew Dickerson performed in Dramatic Interpretation.  All did a terrific Job and represented Holy Cross Regional School with pride as they competed with the best Forensics teams from across the state of Virginia.  Well done Gaels!

Special thanks go to Mary Hansen for all of her hard work in organizing the weekend, and to Greg Casker and Jon Winters for assisting Mary with the driving, judging and chaperoning.  Mr. Cloyd drove to Madison to join the students on Friday for a visit between events, giving them a boost as they went from Student Congress to the Speech and Debate events and we also met up with Holy Cross (and Forensic) alumni, Daniel Rezai, who returned to act as a Judge and Parliamentarian.

From Mrs. Main in the library:

Our February reading incentive for elementary students is underway! We will join with students throughout the country in the 'Read Across America' program. Students in Pre-K through 5th grade are keeping track of their reading this month, and each classroom has its own minimum goal for kids to reach(info.went home last week) Students in grades 3-5 are also part of a contest sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center in conjunction with "Read across America."  Sylvan will award prizes to the overall top reader in grades 3-5 and to the top one in each of those classrooms. Each classroom winner stands a chance of winning a new bike!

Students need to turn in their calendars/records on Thursday, March 1st. All elementary students will celebrate our month of reading with a "Dr. Seuss birthday party" on Friday, March 2nd! Stay tuned for more details and please feel free to contact me with any questions! main_h@hcrs-va.org

Important Information from the Office of Catholic Schools in Richmond

TAKE ACTION: SUPPORT PARENTAL CHOICE IN EDUCATION

Urge your legislators to support Education Improvement Scholarship legislation.

Legislation introduced in the Senate and House would create income tax credits for businesses whose donations fund scholarships.  Those scholarships, in turn, would enable low-income students to attend nonpublic K-12 schools.  This Education Improvement Scholarship initiative is the Virginia Catholic Conference's top education priority.  It is vitally important to families with limited economic means, and to Catholic and other nonpublic schools across Virginia as they work to sustain enrollments and provide opportunities for children in their communities.

Please help push this critical school choice initiative all the way to passage this year.  Click Here to view a pre-drafted (but editable) message that could be sent to your Senator and your Delegate to urge their support for this measure.  [After clicking the link in the previous sentence, you will need to scroll down and click "Send Message" in order for your Senator and Delegate to receive your message.]

Please also forward this important message to others you believe may be interested in responding. As mentioned in a prior alert, a rally will be held in support of this legislation, with Governor McDonnell as the keynote speaker.  Please consider attending this exciting event.  Click on the Rally Flyer for further details.

If you are viewing this alert via the Virginia Catholic Conference's website or if a friend forwarded it to you, you are invited to join the Conference's advocacy network, which would enable you to receive regular alerts and updates from the Conference directly by email on respect-life, social-justice, and education issues.  If interested, please  Click Here to Enroll and complete the very short electronic form that is provided.

Help ensure that more families in need of financial assistance can choose the best educational opportunities for their children!
