National Merit Commended Scholars With great pride, we announce that two of our seniors have been named Commended Scholars in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Scholars throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2012 PSAT Qualifying test. Congratulations to Joe Bruzek and Claire Wittman on this prestigious academic honor. Holy Cross School is very proud of you and your hard work. Parents, Please Log On to Renweb! On Monday, October 3, Holy Cross will go live with the Renweb Parent Portal. On this portal you will find important school information pertaining to your child(ren), including announcements, attendance, discipline, and our master calendar as well as current gradebook averages for students in grades 3-12. It is very important that you log on to the site and create a user profile. If you have not already done so, please follow the directions you received via email this week and by U.S. mail last week. You can access the site by going to our website and clicking on the Renweb link. When setting up your username, please do not put any spaces in it, as we have already had a problem with this issue. Once you are in the site, please note the following: 1. Click on the purple box on the left side of the page that says "Tour the New ParentsWeb." This short video will be quite helpful in navigating the site, even though our version is a little different from the one in the video. 2. Please be aware that we have not activated all of the features that are discussed in the video. For instance, you will only be able to see averages in each grade category in the gradebook - not every specific grade will be displayed. 3. Please take the time to review/set up your preferences for both the ParentsWeb family directory and instant alert system. The family directory will be activated on October 31st, so you have several weeks to set up your preferences. 4. When viewing student grades, please allow a reasonable amount of time for teachers to grade assignments and post them online. If you have any problems settting up your username/password please email Fran Harvey harvey_f@hcrs-va.org or Carolyn Jones jones_j@hcrs-va.org.

Author visits Holy Cross School Students in grades 5-8 gathered Friday, Sept. 30th, to listen to Deanna Klingel tell about her experience as an author, and give a little peek into her 2 historical fiction civil war novels, "Avery's Battlefield", and "Avery's Crossroad". She has been traveling throughout Virginia and making appearances at re-enactments. Several students purchased her book(s) and had them autographed by Mrs. Klingel. Among the highlights of her talk, one thing stood out: Mrs. Klingel refused to compromise her Christian values when a New York publisher tried to get her to change the book to what she felt was an inappropriate storyline. She ended up being published by the Christian publisher Journey Forth. For more about Deanne Klingel and her books, visit herwebsite: http://www.booksbydeanna.com (See pics from her visit below.)
